Lambing season is in full swing!
Nicola runs a small commercial flock of around 100 breeding ewes in Gloucestershire. Grazing a 550 acre arable farm, Nicola manages the flock alongside her husband Ed and young family. With Nicola and Ed both being first-generation farmers, grazing a local arable farm was a good solution to the potential land access barrier.
They run a mixed breed flock. It began as a pure Romney flock, but they now have Texel, Beltex and Cheviot crosses, as well as a handful of Zwartbles, Derbyshire Gritstones and Blue Texels as their distinctive features make it easy for the kids to identify.
Nicola says: "The sheep are grazed on permanent pasture alongside cover crops throughout the winter and herbal leys in the summer, lambing outdoor in April. We are lucky to have an approachable landlord who sees the positive benefits of grazing sheep in terms of soil health, biodiversity and more. It's very much a family affair with the kids getting stuck in at every opportunity and we wouldn't change it."
