Thames Basin Heaths Partnership

Thames Basin Heaths Partnership Surrey, Hampshire & Berkshire. Three of the UK’s rarest birds nest here. It’s the nesting birds that give this land its legal protection.

Protecting the heaths of the Special Protection Area and promoting , local country walks that help protect the heaths. We’re a partnership of local councils, land managers and nature conservation bodies conserving the heathland of the Thames Basin Heaths Special Protection Area across Surrey, Hampshire and Berkshire. The Dartford Warbler, Nightjar and Wo

odlark rely on the heathland and nest on or near the ground, making them very vulnerable to disturbance. On this page we’re sharing the story of the heathland and bringing you news of , a conservation strategy to create dog-friendly local country walks that help protect heathland wildlife. We’d love you to fall in love with your local heathland and help secure its future by spreading the word about keeping to main paths, how to and . By looking after the birds, we can all play our part in making sure that protection stays in place. Protecting the birds protects the heaths. Protecting the heaths protects the birds.

It's not often that we say we love wet weather, but are pleased to see regular rainfall on the , lowering the risk of wildfire.

Warden Tim took this atmospheric photo at Brookwood Heath in recently. The dark skies and scattered showers really make the greens of the grass and trees ping!

What do all these gorgeous dogs have in common, can you guess?

They all walk on the and they all have guardians that care about the environment and protecting wildlife👍They are true !

Please join us in celebrating Maple, Violet, Gus and Dora, Ellie and Juno, Tigger and Athena 🐾 as they:

🏆Stick to main paths on the heaths during ground-nesting bird season
🏆Have guardians that bag and bin their poo
🏆Practice their recall skills and fun, engaging games on path
🏆Explore less wildlife sensitive, wooded areas of the heaths
🏆Explore alternative walks

We look forward to meeting more heroes on the heaths through the rest of the season 😀

Please help us spread the word about our work to local teachers! We’re especially keen to meet teachers from schools close to heathland 🐦🐦🐦

This is a wonderful opportunity to meet our amazing Education Officer, Michael, for an evening wander at Chobham Common National Nature Reserve in search of one of our most mysterious birds – the European . You’ll learn about this magical nocturnal bird, steeped in folklore, and the rare heathland habitat it calls home for just a few months of the year. Michael is sure to provide plenty of inspiration for including heathland in your lessons and it’s a great opportunity to see him in action and find out about the free heathland sessions he delivers in schools (in the classroom or on the heath).

It's that time of year when heathland are leaving their natal ponds and venturing out into the big wide world!

Warden Sophie spotted a number of them recently at Chobham Common National Nature Reserve in 🐸

Do keep your eyes peeled around pond entrances and for those following the same paths as you. We hope that they find their new homes safely 😀

Thank you to Senior Warden Kay for running a fantastic walk at Bramshill Plantation last night!

Nightjars usually lay their first eggs late May/early June, so coupled with the warm weather they've been very active recently.

With two males churring simultaneously, and three birds flying at once, it was a challenge to determine what was going on last night!

However, much of last night's activity centred around a lone mature pine. We spotted three birds in flight which we presume could be two males competing for the attention of a female. There was a sense that 'three's a crowd'!

I have only observed 'tail feather waggling' on one occasion before, where two Nightjars were perched on a branch together and one was actively waggling! This behaviour is likely courtship behaviour in addition to wing clapping and regular flight calls. Such a privilege to watch!

Every time you watch Nightjars you learn something new. Thank you to those that joined us and shared in the enthusiasm for these magical birds 😀 ~Communications Officer Nicky
