I had the honour of meeting Peter Berry and Deb Bunt at the Dementia Marketplace last week. I also ducked out of my ‘stall’ to listen to their (nearly) hour long talk about Peter’s remarkable life living with Dementia.
Peter utterly blew my socks off. He had watched his father’s life taken away in stages through Dementia and then, at only 50, was given the diagnosis himself.
Peter was so open, honest, sincere and funny about his determination to live his best life.
Peter still cycles on road bikes and his faithful Penny (Farthing), he gives talks here and abroad and yet he has his Dementia monster nipping at his heels.
His talks are wise, informative and entertaining although, he admits, he won’t remember them 5 minutes later.
If you have any interest in Dementia…because of work or family, then THIS is the book to read.
All credit to Deb too…as his friend she has entered Peter’s world and injects the perfect amount of support, companionship, humour and practicality into their friendship. Her ability to ghost write for Peter and include her own perspective in this book is astounding…I honestly couldn’t put it down.
As Peter says…it was very important for him to have this (and the following) book published for all to read, and yet, due to the Dementia, it is a book he will never be able to read himself.
