🧀 Don’t let its big aroma fool you… Taleggio is beautifully creamy, buttery and surprisingly gentle to eat!

Our Taleggio DOP “Il Caravaggio” is made by Caseificio Defendi, a family-run Italian dairy founded in Caravaggio, Lombardy, in 1865. Now in its fourth generation, Defendi combines traditional cheesemaking with modern expertise to produce some of the region’s best-loved cheeses.

Taleggio itself has an even longer story. Named after Val Taleggio in the province of Bergamo, its origins date back to before the 10th century. The DOP status means its ingredients, production and geographical origins are carefully protected.

Made with pasteurised cow’s milk, this soft washed-rind cheese is matured for at least 35 days. During that time, each cheese is regularly turned and sponged with salt water, helping to develop its distinctive rind, intense aroma and wonderfully creamy texture. Its flavour is delicate and slightly sweet when young, developing a gentle tang as it matures.

How to enjoy it:

🧀 Allow it to come to room temperature and serve with crusty bread, crackers, pears, figs, walnuts or mixed berries.

🍝 Melt it into risotto, pasta sauces or gnocchi for instant richness.

🥔 Try it over polenta or baked potatoes.

🍕 Add it to pizza, focaccia, burgers or a seriously luxurious cheese toastie.

🍷 Pair it with a fruity Italian red such as Barbera or Valpolicella—or ask us to help you find the perfect bottle!

Available now at Rizzo Deli. Have you tried Taleggio before, or has its aroma scared you away? 😄

🥂 Who says the non-drinker has to miss out on the celebratory bottle?

Bottega 0 White is a beautifully presented non-alcoholic sparkling grape drink from Bottega — the family-owned Italian producer founded in Treviso in 1977.

Unlike many alternatives, this isn’t a wine that has simply had the alcohol removed. It begins with carefully selected grape must, which is kept chilled to prevent fermentation before bubbles are added. The result is sweet, delicate and beautifully balanced, with fresh notes of apple, pear, acacia and white flowers. 🍏🍐🌼

Serve it properly chilled at around 4–5°C in a flute and enjoy it:

🍰 With fruit tarts, pastries or cream-based desserts
🧀 Alongside fresh goat’s or sheep’s cheese
🍕 With pizza, antipasti or savoury nibbles
🍓 As the sparkling base for a fruity mocktail
🎉 Whenever you want to join in with the toast while keeping alcohol to a minimum

It contains less than 0.5% ABV and comes in a rather fabulous bottle too — ideal for celebrations, lunches, gifting or simply making an ordinary evening feel a little more special.

Available now at Rizzo Deli.

You’ve heard of buffalo mozzarella…but have you tried buffalo butter? 🇮🇹🧈

This is B***o di Bufala from Fattorie Garofalo – a beautifully creamy Italian butter made from 100% buffalo milk whey.

Fattorie Garofalo’s story began in Capua, Campania, in 1962, when the Garofalo family purchased their first farmland and began raising Mediterranean buffalo. Today, the company oversees the complete journey from its buffalo pastures through to the finished dairy products.

Pure white in colour, soft and easy to spread, this butter has a delicate aroma and a smooth, gently sweet flavour. It can be used just like ordinary butter, but adds something a little more special!

Try it:

🧈 Spread generously over warm crusty bread or toasted sourdough
🍝 Melted through freshly cooked pasta with black pepper and Parmesan
🥔 Added to mashed potatoes for an extra-creamy finish
🥦 Tossed through steamed or roasted vegetables
🍚 Stirred into risotto just before serving
🥐 Used in both sweet and savoury baking

Sometimes the simplest ingredients make the biggest difference – and this is definitely one for curious food lovers!

Available now from Rizzo Deli. Pop in and discover a little taste of Campania 🇮🇹

Quite possibly the strangest looking thing in our deli… but what actually is it? 👀

This wonderfully unusual creation is Auricchio Provolone Giovane - a young Italian provolone, traditionally shaped by hand into its distinctive pear or flask-like form.

Provolone is a cow’s-milk pasta filata cheese, meaning the curds are heated and stretched during production - the same family of cheesemaking used for mozzarella and scamorza. The cheese is then moulded, tied and hung to mature, which explains both its extraordinary shape and the cord around the top.

“Giovane” means young, so unlike a heavily matured, sharp provolone, this one is mild and delicate, with a smooth, semi-firm texture and a lovely gentle milky flavour. Auricchio has been making provolone since 1877, when Gennaro Auricchio founded the company near Naples using a closely guarded family recipe.

So, how do you eat it?

Remove the cord and the outer wax coating, then slice or cube the cheese. Enjoy it:

🧀 On an antipasti board with prosciutto, salami, olives and marinated vegetables
🍐 With fresh pears, apples, figs, honey or fruit preserves
🥪 Sliced into sandwiches, toasties or panini
🔥 Grilled on a hotplate until golden and deliciously soft
🍕 Melted over pizza, baked pasta, vegetables or savoury pies
🥗 Cubed through a salad for a mild, creamy addition

Because this is a young, delicate provolone, pair it with a wine that won’t overpower it. Try a crisp Pinot Grigio, Gavi or Soave, a dry Italian rosé or a glass of Prosecco. If you prefer red, choose something light and fruity such as Valpolicella.

It might look more like an ornament than something to eat, but underneath that unusual exterior is a wonderfully versatile Italian cheese! Come and discover the strangest-looking thing in Rizzo Deli – and take the whole thing home for £18.50.
