Chickens for sale: just £4 per bird

Our year old chickens are currently midway through their first moult and ready for collection in 2 weeks time, for an evening collection on October 2nd. This makes space for our point of lay chickens.

Our hens are as free range as you can get, so you would be taking on a healthy chicken that has enjoyed roaming and foraging her entire life.
https://www.topbarnfarmshop.co.uk/shop-products/pastured-eggs

To register interest please text me on 07740368691 with the word ‘chicken’ & the number you are interested in, and I can text you with more details on collection in due course.

So why would they be good for you, if we have decided to rear younger birds?

🐔 Why a one-year-old laying hen is good for a home:
She is already mature and laying eggs; an immediate supply of eggs without raising a chick…
She still has productive years ahead; a healthy hen can continue laying for several years, although production gradually declines.
She is useful beyond egg production; she can provide manure, breeding potential, pest control and companionship.
Her declining production is less important; if she lays fewer eggs as she ages, a household may still consider her worthwhile.
Lower costs and small scale; feed cost per egg isn't as critical as it is on a commercial farm.

🏭 Why she may not be economical commercially

Commercial egg farms have much tighter economic calculations; a hen consumes feed every day, regardless of whether she lays an egg that day.

As a laying hen gets older:

Egg production generally declines compared with her peak production.
Feed efficiency becomes less favourable—the farm still has to feed and house her.
Eggshell quality and egg size can change, potentially affecting the value of the eggs.
Housing space has a cost. A less productive hen occupies space that could be used for a younger, more productive bird.
The farm needs consistent, high production to make the operation profitable.

So the key difference is:

At home, the value of the hen is broader than just the number of eggs she produces. Commercially, her value is heavily tied to how many saleable eggs she produces relative to her feed, housing and management costs.
