Our Farm sits at the top of the National Trust’s Brockhampton Estate in Herefordshire. It is a mixed farm of 550 acres; at its highest point there is a view across 8 counties which is simply breathtaking. James and Victoria Hawkins have farmed here since 2001 and their youngest son Fraser now farms with them. Environmental management is at the heart of the business. Through regeneration and conservation the farmland is being restored.

Remember the hedge we coppiced back in the winter?

As you can see from the before and after photos, our plan worked 😍
The stumps have all sent up multiple new shoots ready to form a rejuvenated hedge!
We’ve chosen chestnut posts for the fencing and don’t they look great 🤩
Big thanks to C.coombes fencing for some very smart work and Rob Goddard Agricultural Supplies for providing everything we needed to get the job done 👌

Happy cows and an even happier Fraser yesterday ☺️
All our cattle are now out grazing across the farm!
We will check each of them everyday (sometimes twice), to make sure they’ve got plenty of grass to go at.
This group are grazing one of our latest meadows and with a wide variety of plants they will pick and choose what they’d like to eat each day!

Exciting time for some of our calves today!
This is their first time being out at grass 🥳
We will bring them in at night over the next few days to make sure they’re all adjusting to their new grass diet. Then from the weekend they won’t be back in the sheds until November 🙌🙌
Be sure to say hello to them when walking past the farm

How many lambs are we having this year?

We recently pregnancy scanned our Hebridean ewes, using an ultrasound machine we can determine how many lambs each ewe is growing. This helps us to manage our flock better in the run up to lambing and makes for easier management when lambs are being born!

Big congratulations to our rams Bazil and Fergus as this year has been the best ever scanning at 163% (100 lambs expected).
*swipe for last years cutest lamb…

Hedge planting ✅
Today Victoria and Fraser finished off planting 230m of hedge planting!
A mixture of Hawthorn, Blackthorn, Holy, Hazel, Spindle Berrie, Guelder Rose, Dogwood, Privet and Field Maple.
It’s hard work, but the sunshine this afternoon made it a bit easier

We’ve had a busy start to the year so far (well, Fraser has)….

We’ve started coppicing some of our hedges that were earmarked last autumn!
The process involves cutting the hedge low to the ground to allow new and vigorous growth from the base creating a dense and healthy hedge, and much more stock proof!
Any gaps will be filled in with new hedge plants before fencing in the hedge to protect the new shoots from livestock/pests.

*it does look quite brutal at first but it’s a tried and tested method of rejuvenating an old hedge
