We’re preparing sheep for the 3 Counties Show.
• Deciding which ones to show – they must have perfect teeth and the best conformation
• Separating them out and giving them a special diet. Cabbages are good, apparently!
• Washing, trimming, generally primping and fussing. (There’ll be hoof oil later. Chanel I wouldn’t wonder.)
• And halter training, so they’ll stand in the ring.
Laura says “I really love showing these sheep. They not just sheep on the farm, they’re show-worthy, and we’re showing what we can do. Really satisfying.”

As always, the workshop is a hive of activity.
Here students are making new handles for tools, and freeing off a jammed brake cylinder.
Useful skills, really motivating for the students – and with Matt in charge it’s always enormous fun.

Aston looks slightly embarrassed to be in the spotlight here, but she is our Qualifications Assessor, authorised by City & Guilds and AQA to oversee and manage all our qualifications.
Students work towards Level 1 Award, Certificate and Diploma in ‘Land Based Studies’ or in ‘Employability’, with units taught and assessed by our various staff members.
Younger students, and those with us for a shorter time, do AQA awards in Animal Care, Horticulture, Cooking, Construction, Mechanics, Emotional Coaching … the list goes on.
At the moment 17 students are entered for C&G – and all are on track to complete this term.
And so far this academic year students have clocked up a total of 255 AQA awards between them, with more to come this term. We may even break 300!
For many of our students this is the first time they have achieved anything in their education, so it’s a huge boost to their self-esteem, as well as gaining entry to colleges and sixth forms and preparing them for life.

It’s Babies week!
• 9 spotty piglets
• 3 goat kids
• And the final Cotswold lamb for this year
All in the one week.
All together now: "Aaahh".

We make no apology for showing so many pictures of food: home-made, often home-grown or home-reared.
• Preparing food is an important life-skill that our students learn here
• It’s an area where some already shine (and we enjoy their results)
• The midday meal is a crucial part of our Longlands day
And, of course, farming is ultimately all about food production.

It’s not unusual for students to arrive at Longlands very distressed. Something has happened at home, or they’re worried what they’ll find when they return. Will their parents even be there?
Sue recently told us that she wished she’d been taken into care when she was younger, rather than having to care for her needy, drug-addicted mother.
Ben (who was with us for over two years) was alone in the house with his father who had terminal cancer – but died unexpectedly in the night. The child was blamed for the death. The family told him he should have called emergency services. He was 12 years old at the time.
It can take hours of our care and comforting before they can face the day. Guinea pigs can be a great help with this – such quiet simple company, munching away on carrot sticks.
We spend many hours in the company of these young people, listening and talking and working alongside them, witnessing their sorrows and joys.
We hope their adversities help make them stronger. Experience is indicating that it certainly can.
