There's something interesting about businesses that build an audience before they build the business around it, and Rizzo Italian Deli - Worcester is a particularly good example.

Gianluca Austin-Rizzo didn't start with his own deli or w**e shop. He began by hosting w**e tastings and dinners from a space inside a local Italian restaurant, sharing his knowledge and passion for Italian w**e in a way that was deliberately relaxed and approachable.

It clearly found an audience. Over the following three years, the events regularly sold out and Rizzo W**e Club grew into a community of more than 700 members, giving Gianluca the confidence to take what he'd created to the next stage.

Earlier this year, that resulted in the opening of Rizzo Deli & W**e Shop on King Street, giving the business a permanent home where people can discover Italian w**es, charcuterie, cheeses, fresh pasta and artisan products, alongside produce from local suppliers.

I think there's a useful lesson in the way the business has developed, because we often assume growth starts with finding premises, investing in them and then working out how to attract enough customers through the door.

Rizzo's journey has been almost the reverse. Gianluca started with an idea, built a following around it, learnt what people responded to and then created a physical business for a community that already existed.

The shop may be relatively new to Worcester, but in many ways the business behind it had been growing for several years before the doors ever opened.

Sometimes your first customers don't arrive after you launch. They're the reason you're able to launch in the first place.

Known for its high-altitude vineyards, volcanic soils and cooler climate, Irpinia is one of Southern Italy’s most important w**e areas and home to Fiano di Avellino, Greco di Tufo and Taurasi.

For this special evening, we welcome Vinosia W**ery, founded by the Ercolino family in Irpinia, with a w**ery representative joining Gianluca for an interactive guided tasting.
