🍷 Friday’s Weekend Sipper – Hermandad Cabernet Franc

If your weekend plans call for a seriously good red, this week’s Weekend Sipper takes us to Argentina’s Uco Valley.

Hermandad Cabernet Franc is produced by Falasco W**es as part of its W**emaker Series, with fruit grown in high-altitude vineyards around 1,100 metres above sea level.

This is a bold, full-bodied expression of Cabernet Franc, packed with blackberry and blackcurrant, alongside layers of sweet spice, to***co, graphite and subtle oak. There’s plenty of concentration, but smooth, silky tannins bring everything together for a long, complex finish.

It’s a particularly good bottle to put on the table with food. Think ribeye steak, roasted lamb or grilled game, while mushroom risotto, miso-grilled aubergine or roasted peppers make great vegetarian pairings.

🥂 From Bordeaux to Ch*****ne…

After seeing the harvest and first grape crushing in Bordeaux earlier this week, Richard’s w**e travels have continued north to Ch*****ne, with a visit to Baron de Rothschild at Le Grand Clos.

And judging by the photographs, he’s managed to get pretty close to the action again!

Richard had the opportunity to spend time amongst the barrels where the Ch*****ne is currently in the making, seeing another stage of the journey long before the finished bottles eventually make their way onto our shelves.

It’s been quite a few days, going from the vineyards and cellars of Château Clarke and Château des Laurets during the Bordeaux harvest to discovering more about Ch*****ne with Baron de Rothschild – not to mention a considerable amount of food and w**e along the way.

For a family w**e merchant that has been in the trade since 1918, trips like this are a valuable opportunity to maintain relationships with producers, learn more about the w**es first-hand and bring some of those stories back to our customers in Worcester.

We suspect Richard may have a few bottles to tell us about when he gets home… 🥂🍾

Today we’re celebrating International Port Day, so it’s the perfect excuse to explore one of Portugal’s most famous w**es.

From rich, fruit-forward Ruby Port to mellow, nutty Tawny and refreshing White Port, there’s far more variety to discover than you might expect. And if you’re not quite sure where to start, we’ve got several options available at Evertons:

🍷 W**e of the Month – A Growers Touch

This month, we’re heading to Australia for a range with a story that starts with the people behind the grapes.

A Growers Touch, produced by Mino & Co in the Riverina region of New South Wales, was created to celebrate the growers themselves. Each bottle features portraits of the people responsible for growing the grapes, putting the farmers and their connection to the land firmly at the heart of the w**e.

The range focuses on approachable, fruit-driven w**es that offer plenty of character without the hefty price tag – making them particularly good bottles to discover if you fancy trying something different from Australia.

🍷 Bordeaux Month… from Bordeaux itself!

We’re celebrating Bordeaux Month in the shop throughout September, but Richard has taken things one step further and headed straight to the source.

He’s currently in Bordeaux as a guest of Edmond de Rothschild, visiting Château Clarke and Château des Laurets – and the timing couldn’t have been much better. Richard was there to see the harvest taking place and the first crushing of the grapes, which is a real privilege as access during this particularly busy and important stage of the w**emaking year is rarely granted to visitors.

It’s an opportunity to see first-hand what’s happening in the vineyards and w**ery at the very beginning of the process, rather than simply tasting the finished w**e at the other end. There have, of course, also been plenty of barrels along the way…and even more food and w**e!

Next stop is Ch*****ne, where Richard will be spending the day with Baron de Rothschild. Apparently there’s more food and w**e involved there too. It’s a demanding itinerary… 🥂

Meanwhile, back in Worcester, we have more than 50 Bordeaux w**es to explore in the shop, with 10% off the entire Bordeaux range throughout September as part of Bordeaux Month.

🍷 W**e of the Week – Akarua Pinot Noir 2020

This week we’re heading to Central Otago, New Zealand, for a Pinot Noir from the renowned Bannockburn sub-region.

Akarua Pinot Noir 2020 is a beautifully expressive, fruit-led w**e that brings together the vibrant character Central Otago Pinot Noir is known for with plenty of structure and elegance.

Expect aromas of red cherry, raspberry and red plum, layered with toasted clove, vanilla, wild thyme and a subtle hint of smoke. On the palate, it’s medium-bodied and juicy, with bright red berry fruit, fresh acidity and fine, silky tannins.

The w**e is hand-harvested before being fermented on its skins and matured for 9–11 months in French oak, adding complexity without overpowering the fruit.

🍷 Akarua Pinot Noir 2020 – £37.29

It’s drinking beautifully now, but can also be cellared through to around 2030. If you’re planning what to put on the table with it, try it alongside roast duck, grilled lamb or a rich mushroom risotto.
