Things are moving on at a relentless pace here at Rosie's HQ - at least a month late, but better late than never.
The little apple harvesters front wheel hasn't held its breath for more than a day since last year so Bartleys tyres in Ruthin aced that for me. In a belts and braces approach to getting out of trouble I bought a new wheel for it as well at Morgans Ruthin. The big harvester had a fair bit of untested mods done to it over Summer to try to improve its pick up capability on the tiny fruits I grow here, so I went down a row and back up - it is picking up better but it was hoofing a few apples out the front too.
Partly this is due to the horrible growing season we've had, but I have done a bit more work and it is a bit better now. I went round one tree twice with the little harvester and he seems pleased to be active again at the srart of his 10th season. So. I did that today to see if they are in shape, they seem to be. Now its put the last few things together to kick the season off properly next week. In the rain.
Lovely sunset this evening. Wrexham beat Preston 4-1 and the Cilwendeg rally runs tonight.

Another fun filled day in the Apple heads life.
Filling enough bottles for 3 batches of apple juice thats all I'm doing - its WAY too much work and effort for near enough no return.
But, what a super drink in the Summer if we get another...
I got 2 batches Pasteurised so they'll be good for 2 years but after the 2nd I had to suspend operations to deliver c***r to Snowdon at Pen Ceunant tearooms. Horrible night with huge standing water in the bends. Got back from there 11.30 just in time to get batch 3 in and then that is it for apple juice - c***r next hopefully. Here are some pics

Well, its got to be said I'm having a bit of a mare at the moment, not all my fault, but I did have to call in at Llandegla shop for some stress busting cake today.
First problem, a dead mouse! - the Computer type, so I was unable to process an order going out untill the last 30 seconds - that went through OK so there are bottles heading down to Great Yarmouth right now.
Many of my customers will be aware, I'd actually run out of my Wicked Wasp c***r in bottles. Again, only partially guilty. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have my own bottling line. 20 years in the can industry conditioned me into doing multiple boring repetative tasks for 12 hour shifts, but a decent one is a good £300,000 and it would have needed more than just me to run it. Another nail in the glass bottle job is the Welsh Government are going where the Scottish one failed a couple of years back with a bottle return system next year - So I get my c***r contract filled, which they did on Wednesday. I haven't had a spare 5 hours to go collect it but the Wicked Wasp bottles arrived home today safe and sound thanks to Williams Haulage. As I type this I'm really enjoying the first bottle out with a piece of cheese.
This is, without question the best bottled Wicked Wasp I've ever made. Well worth the wait - cheers everyone!

Ok its a start. The very slowest least productive I could make, but starting 5pm I've milled and pressed a drop of apple juice.
Its given a tick of approval for the elevator belt and mill all running tickety boo but on a very small volume, pressed on my old Herefordshire twin screw c***r press I bought in bits at Welland Steam Fair in 2005. Hard going I can tell you, but the smell of freshly milled apple is so evocative. Takes me right back to the first 5 gallons ever.

Its turning out to be a very strange year. As I sit here now I can hear screaming winds that we normally get in September but it was lovely and calm earlier. I took a cursory glance down a different bit of orchard today and although most apples are still hanging on to the tree a good few are dropping and a whole bunch of trees didn't get the chance to produce anything.
Several reasons, 2026 will have been an off year anyway due to biennual bearing. Pollination time was quite often wet windy and cold so the bees stayed put. I've had good crops with Tremletts bitter and White Jersey who have been poor last few years and my usual reliable croppers have just taken time out. Add to the mix no rain for weeks on end - I only mowed the orchards once but once it went too late the grass has absolutely shot up!
So I suppose I'm saying it's going to be an odd harvest and I should be getting started...
