A damp walk around a customers farm today with thoughts of next steps, reflection on when we started advising here a year ago and the strides forward made already. Decided to take a spade today, because despite whatever soil samples tell us and however healthy a plant might look you can’t beat having a dig around having a look and crucially a sniff to tell what’s actually going on.

Due to corrective actions on these fields over the past year we now have aerated soils allowing water through them. Reduced horizontal fracturing and more vertical fracturing (a sign of better structure).Increased worm 🪱 activity and healthy root systems. We’re a long way from our intended destination, but all journeys start with a first step.

How this field looked a year ago, it was too wet to drill and many other fields that were drilled the seed drowned. Thankfully, this year the whole farm is drilled and everything is green from hedge to hedge. here we come…

Silk purse from a sows ear… herbal ley introduced to a very tired Weald clay soil. Whilst these fields were almost beaten into submission to get something close to a seed bed, we expect to see a massive improvement to the health of the soil here by being taken out of an annual rotation for a few years. Perennial cropping is vital for restoring soil health and restoring natural fertility.

Stubble turnips drilled on the green into an existing herbal ley that is coming to the end of its life, grasses will be sprayed off using a selective herbicide and leave the clover and other herbs to grow with the turnips. This will provide a bit of over winter rocket fuel for the sheep 🐑. This has also ensured that we have no periods of bare soil and offers greater protection from flea beetle attack meaning no insecticide use. Now to keep the deer 🦌 off!

We are big fans of Suregrow’s fertiliser here at N J Green services and have promoted for years. Has always been a fantastic equine product (it’s also rather good on lawns too but 🤫) we are a local stockist of this product and we are also able to offer spreading services too.

With September being a second peak grass growth month it’s a great time to get a little bit on to strengthen winter pastures.

Removing compaction from existing swards is vital for many reasons especially when you consider the impact from the weather over the past 12 months. Healthier roots, healthier plants, better water management and most importantly allowing your soils to breathe and creating opportunities for soil life. All of which allow for more efficient and cost effective nutrient management.
We are finding that the machine is doing a great job in this old permanent pasture which hasn’t been touched for years.
