Most smart doorbells die because they're running off a battery nobody remembers to charge.

Hardwiring it into the existing bell circuit means it never drops offline, never needs taking down, and it mounts flush with no trailing cable in sight.

Are you running a battery one at the moment? How often are you actually charging it?

Could you get this steel beam into position without removing the walls?

This is one of those construction jobs where space is the biggest challenge. The gap between the two buildings is too tight to bring the beam straight through, so we’re manoeuvring it from the outside and sliding it across into the prepared opening.

Sometimes the solution isn’t about having more space — it’s about finding a smarter way to use the space you have.

Fellow sparkies, have you ever forgotten to put in a cable before the plastering? Yes or no?

The partition wall is done and the plastering is underway, but I nearly created a problem for myself. Being the investor, project manager and electrician on my own property project means wearing too many hats — and sometimes, the simplest jobs are the ones you forget.

Luckily, I caught it before it was too late. Even experience doesn’t make you immune to the basics.

What does an electrician have to do with a garden fountain?

We were called out to restore this one because it holds memories of a client's late dog. Traced the faulty pump wiring, restored power safely, got the water flowing again.

Not every job is a consumer unit. Some of them matter for completely different reasons.

What's the most unusual thing you've ever asked a tradesman to fix?

Running an extension lead out through the kitchen window is not outdoor power.

Doing it properly means armoured cable buried at the right depth, an isolator you can actually reach, and weatherproof sockets rated for a British winter. Done once, it lasts decades.

What would you run off it — hot tub, workshop, or just decent lighting?

Where's the earth rod? ⚡🚗

On this EV charger installation in Bristol, we had one problem before we could continue: we couldn't locate the earth rod. The driveway had already been finished, so it's likely buried somewhere underneath.

But that raises an important question: how do you carry out an earth loop impedance test when you can't access the earth rod?

There's a way around it—and I've got a little trick to show you in this reel.

Why is earth loop impedance important for an EV charger?
It helps verify that the earthing and fault protection arrangements are suitable and that protective devices can operate correctly when needed.

What if the earth electrode can't be found?
You don't simply guess where it is. The installation needs to be assessed and tested using an appropriate method based on the earthing arrangement.

If you're in Bristol or the surrounding areas and need a professional EV charger installation or electrical testing, contact Live Line Electrical.

This is the bit nobody photographs.

Chasing walls for a new socket run is dusty, slow, and completely invisible the moment it's plastered over. But it's the difference between cable properly protected in the wall and cable clipped somewhere it shouldn't be.

How many sockets does your kitchen have? And how many extension leads are quietly making up the difference?

One ceiling light in the middle of the room is the worst way to light a living room.

It flattens everything and drops shadow exactly where you're sitting. Layered lighting — a couple of circuits, dimmable, lit where you actually use the room — costs less than most people expect and changes the room completely.

How many light switches does your living room have? One is a bad sign.

It’s what you don’t see that makes all the difference... and heat! Thermal imaging shows the invisible comfort of a fully functioning electric underfloor heating system. Using high-tech diagnostic tools ensures every mat and cable is heating evenly across your bathroom floor.

Cold showers belong in gym challenges, not your morning routine.

An electric shower pulls more current than almost anything else in the house. That means a dedicated circuit, the right cable size and RCD protection — not a spur off the nearest socket, which is what we still find more often than we'd like.

Has yours been running cold halfway through, or losing pressure? That's usually the first sign.
