There's a lot to keep track of when managing a herd 🐄

Horizon helps bring all of your herd information together in one place, making it easier to manage daily tasks, monitor herd health, and identify cows that may need a closer look. Rather than just showing you data, Horizon acts as an extra set of eyes on the farm. It also gives you a clear picture of how your average cow is performing, making it easier to spot changes in milk yield, activity, rumination, and overall herd performance before they become bigger issues.

The result isn't more information to look at it's knowing what needs your attention today.

There's a lot more to robotics than just installing a robot. 🐄

These photos are from a knowledge sharing session we held back in March as part of the preparation for farmers making the move to robotic milking.

A successful transition isn't just about the technology it's about the people involved. Before a robot is switched on, there are often conversations between farmers, vets, nutritionists, consultants, and our team to make sure everyone is working together and planning for the best possible outcome. Every farm is different, which is why taking the time to understand the herd, routines, and goals is such an important part of the process. It's all about helping farmers feel confident and supported every step of the way.

Every robotic milking journey starts with questions.

Over the years, we've had some great conversations with farmers who are curious about how robotic milking works day to day. From how cows adapt to the robots, to what happens when something doesn't go quite to plan, there's always plenty to discuss. That's why we're putting together a series answering some of the most common questions we hear from farmers.

Fresh feed, whenever your herd needs it whether that's beef or dairy 🐄

The Lely Vector is designed to provide both dairy and beef herds with fresh, precisely mixed feed throughout the day. Combining automatic mixing, feeding, and feed pushing in one system, the Vector keeps feed within reach while adapting rations to the needs of different animal groups. Its unique pushing technology works from both sides of the robot, helping ensure feed stays accessible along the feed fence at all times.

The result? Your herd gets more consistent feeding, you waste less feed, save on fuel and machinery use and have more time for other jobs around the farm.

A big day at Moorshard Farm 🐄

While installation is an important milestone, start-up day is where the transition really begins. It's an opportunity to work alongside the farm team, answer questions, provide practical guidance, and help establish confidence in new routines and processes. Our team remained on farm throughout the day, supporting both the people and the system to ensure the smoothest possible transition.

Thank you to everyone at Moorshard Farm for their commitment and positivity throughout the process. We look forward to following their journey in the months ahead.

A cleaner barn, built around your routine 🐄

Another Lely Discovery Collector C2 installation helping keep the barn clean without disrupting the herd.

It works flexibly across different barn layouts, running separate routes behind cows so the feed fence stays undisturbed. From cross alleys to waiting areas in front of the robot, it’s designed to reach almost every part of the barn keeping conditions consistent throughout the day. Its compact design and built-in sensors allow it to move easily through tight spaces, following pre-set routes without cables or gutters. Control is simple too, with route timing and settings managed straight from your phone. A practical system, working quietly in the background.

Cleaner floors. Less disruption. More flexibility. 🐄
The Lely Discovery Collector C2 is designed to work around your barn not the other way around. Its compact design and built-in sensors allow it to move easily through tight spaces, cross alleys, under sorting gates, and in front of the automatic milking system all without cables or gutters. As it works, water is sprayed from the front to improve collection and from the rear to create extra grip, helping maintain a clean and safe environment for yourcows. Routes and cleaning frequency can be adjusted to fit your routine or your herd’s directly from your phone.

One feed solution for both dairy and beef. 🐄
The Lely Vector is designed to bring flexibility and consistency to feeding whether you’re running a dairy herd or beef operation. By automating feeding and pushing fresh rations regularly throughout the day, the Vector helps keep feed available when your animals want it most.
For dairy farms, that means supporting intake and milk production. For beef farms, it means consistent feeding with less daily labour.

The result is the same:
✔ Fresh feed available 24/7
✔ More control over feeding routines
✔ Less time spent on repetitive tasks

You’ve probably heard of milking robots… but do you know what actually happens when a cow walks in? 🐄

Daryl, one of our Service Engineers, talks through how the works from start to finish.
First, the cow walks into the robot and is identified through her tag or collar. The robot then knows exactly who she is and whether she’s due to be milked. Feed is provided based on settings managed through Horizon and tailored to that cow.

Next, the robot’s brushes clean the teats to help prepare for milking and support udder hygiene. After that, the teat detection system uses laser and camera technology to position the cups accurately.

Once attached, milk is collected through the robot and monitored before being transferred into the farm’s milk system and tank. During the process, milk data and quality information including indicators that support cell count monitoring are captured to help with herd management too.

There’s a lot happening behind the scenes but when you break it down, it’s a smart process designed to fit into the cow’s normal routine. If you’ve got any questions about how Lely robots work, get in touch with Lely Center Yeovil.
