There's nothing like building a little community of talented whisky fans who will etch your own label design onto your bottle and present you with it.

We're absolutely delighted with this. Our labels are full of little hidden details - there's a whole blog post about it on our website. In this picture you can see the boot prints on the path, which are the actual boots that Abbie and Chris wore on their adventures in Tasmania. And our lovely benefactor has even added a little pair of Theo's footprints on the path! We're not crying, YOU'RE crying.

The bottle is up on display in the tasting room now, pop along and have a look!

The low wines run on the still today smelt incredible.

We're working with a new malt at the moment - the same barley varietal, Maris Otter, but now from a maltings just down the road in Castleford. Thomas Fawcett & Sons Ltd is an eighth-generation family maltings and they are now able to provide floor-malted Maris Otter malt, all grown here in Yorkshire.

So this batch of future-whisky that we're working on now will have some impressively low food miles to it's name; 100% grown, floor malted, milled, mashed, fermented, distilled (twice), matured and bottled within the boundaries of God's Own Country (that's Yorkshire to the rest of you).

The longer evenings are making us nostalgic, especially with visits from old friends from Tasmania over the past couple of weeks.

The first time came to visit we gave him a T-shirt and set him to work helping us install the drain that runs down the middle of the distillery. So when he came back last week we had to recreate that same photo, in exactly the same location. And he'd even brought the T-shirt with him! That is some good, durable merch right there.

Our stone sign at the gate of the distillery is weathering in nicely - we can't believe it's been stood there proudly for 7 years now.

Its story as a Cooper King Distillery sign began in 2019 when our friend Harriet selected the stone and carved it for us. Everyone should have a friend who's a York Minster stonemason, very handy.

But it's actually rather a lot older than that - it's two 18th century chunks of stone, originally from the South Quire Aisle of York’s 800 year old Minster. The Minster has a permanent stoneyard, staffed by master craftsmen, like Harriet, and they sometimes auction off pieces of stone that have been replaced as part of the conservation work that goes on all the time.

Installing them was a full-on job (local tractor to the rescue, again.) The team here love seeing it as we pull up in the morning.

You can read all about it on our blog (cooperkingdistillery.co.uk/blog/york-minster-stone) or come and see it for yourself! We're open for tours on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and the shop and bar are open on Saturdays too. The weather this weekend looks perfect for ice-cold G&Ts and 18th-century stone appreciation.

On Tuesday night we had a gaggle of friends over to the distillery for a tasting evening like no other.

Dean Jackson, eminent Tasmanian distiller and one of the people that taught Chris and Abbie back in 2014, presented whiskies from Waubs Harbour Whisky distillery in Tasmania. Rye Sweeney, Australian whisky expert, brought some bottles from Hellyers Road Distillery. We also cracked open Chris and Abbie's bottle (one of only 24 ever made...) of the Redlands/Lark Distillery collaboration bottling, which they'd bought over there and saved for a special occasion. And that occasion was Tuesday! And to round it off, we also tasted our own Port-Bound, and the port that had previously been in the casks, just for good measure.

Oh, and we started with new-make martinis. As you do.

Turns out that there's nothing better than a room full of people all passionately into delicious whisky, plus good food and a cute dog.

And just to cram some more into the evening, we finished off by all helping to fill the 20L cask that Kristy Lark had brought over with her last week from Tasmania. This is a special one: 10L of Cooper King new-make spirit, mixed with 10L of new-make spirit, casked and matured here. The mirror-image of the 20L Cooper King ex-whisky and rum cask that she took back with her (cheers Border Force Australia!), which is also filled with the blend of new makes, and will be disgorged on the same day, in about 3 years' time. Two sibling whiskies, from opposite sides of the world! Madness.

Thanks to everyone who joined us on the night and everyone who helped with the washing up the next morning! And if you haven't already, sign up for our newsletter to hear about future madcap events at the distillery. Yorkshire whisky, with Tasmanian heart.
