What gives alpaca fleece its smooth feel and distinctive appearance?

Under a microscope, the outer surface of each alpaca fiber is covered with overlapping cuticle cells, much like the scales of a fish. These tiny scales help fibers hold together when spun into yarn, while also protecting the fleece from moisture and environmental exposure.

Scale height also helps distinguish alpaca fiber from wool. Huacaya fiber typically has a scale height of 0.3 to 0.4 micron, while Suri fiber has an even lower scale height of approximately 0.2 to 0.3 micron. By comparison, wool has a scale height of about 0.8 micron.

Suri fiber also has longer, less frequent scales, contributing to the smooth handle and high luster that define quality Suri fleece. Though these individual scales cannot be seen without magnification, their effects can be felt by hand and seen in the finished fiber.

Rose grey and silver grey( 2, 1 light, 1 mid) 2nd cut alpaca fibre. 250g of either or a mix of both 10 + Pnp, 13.50 total. 2nd cut is neck and legs so a mixture of lengths, ideal for most crafts especially needle or wet felting.
