A pioneering new release from County Corkā€™s iconic Midleton Distillery

Finished in hogshead casks crafted from Irish sweet chestnut, this is the result of an eight-year exploration, led by Midletonā€™s Master Distiller Kevin Oā€™Gorman. Six Irish sweet chestnut trees were hand-picked by the distilleryā€™s specialist forestry team, with their timber left to air dry for two years before being coopered into 250-litre hogshead casks. The result is an exceptionally rare and characterful expression, defined by a rich, sweet character, with layers of indulgent caramel complemented by distinctive earthy wood notes.

A small batch release, the Devilā€™s Casks 10 Year Old is matured in first-fill oloroso sherry casks with a Pedro XimĆ©nez cask finish and presented at cask strength, 56.6% abv, without artificial colour or chill filtration.

Bowmoreā€™s soft smoke is very much on the back foot here, partially obscured by the rich influence of the sherry casks, and the wh**ky is deceptively soft despite its high abv; a few drops of water turn down the heat without breaking its devilish spell.

Now we know for many - that's a big, considered purchase, which is why for those interested, stores have this available to sample. We think you'll be impressed enough to be worth a full bottle.

You can expect raisins, dark chocolate and cherries on the nose - like a rich fug of pipe smoke lingering in a library. An initially delicate tingle of smoke on the palate, with rich oak, stone fruits, dates and a subtle savoury tang giving way to robust peat and tannins on the long, warming finish.
