Sightings and observations from divers and snorkellers were backed up by footage from Baited Underwater Remote Videos (BRUVs) deployed by scientists from the University of Plymouth. Measurements taken from BRUVs and notes from divers confirmed the abundance of octopus on rocky reef habitats, often the same areas targeted by shellfish fisheries.

Dr Bryce Stewart, Senior Research Fellow at the MBA and Associate Professor at the University of Plymouth said: β€œParticularly significant were observations confirming widespread breeding of the common octopus in UK waters, and reports of octopus predation on a wide range of species, including commercially important crabs and lobsters.”

The States of Guernsey intend to publish a policy for Guernsey's coastal waters by the end of next year. It will address long-term how our coastal areas can be managed in the interests of the economy e.g. fisheries, energy needs e.g. wind farms, the community e.g. recreational activities and the natural environment e.g. seabirds and shorebirds.

The policy group are inviting the public to submit their views. This consultation closes on 12th June.

Please complete the survey. Your views matter.

You can use this link https://gov.gg/mspsurvey to access the survey directly online.

🌊 The States of Alderney is inviting islanders, marine users, businesses and organisations to help shape the future of Alderney waters as work begins on the Island’s first Marine Spatial Plan (MSP).

For an island community like Alderney, the sea plays an important role in everyday life, supporting local livelihoods, recreation, tourism, navigation, wildlife and heritage, while also forming a key part of the Island’s identity and economy.

A Marine Spatial Plan helps guide future decisions about how marine space is used and managed, balancing environmental, economic, community and navigational interests over the long term.

As part of this work, the States of Alderney has launched a stakeholder questionnaire seeking views on the current and future use of Alderney waters, including marine activities, important areas, future opportunities and how the marine environment may change over time.

πŸ“ Complete the questionnaire here: https://forms.cloud.microsoft/e/zbxTzyu4nw
Paper copies of the questionnaire are also available at the General Office, Island Hall.
