Quality Cocoa Bean Production Requires Investment โ€” and Deserves a Premium Price

Producing quality cocoa beans is not by chance. It is a deliberate, skillful, and cost-intensive process that farmers must follow all year. From pruning and w**ding to shade control, pest management, and applying fertilizer or organic manure, each step requires labour, tools, and money. These tasks must be done on time, especially during the off-season when farmers have the least income.

Quality also depends on careful harvesting. Farmers must pick only ripe pods, break them properly, and ferment the beans for the right number of days. Drying must be clean and controlled to avoid mould and smoky flavours. Achieving this level of quality requires knowledge, labour, drying surfaces, and sometimes improved equipmentโ€”all of which increase production costs.

Because quality cocoa demands more effort and investment, farmers who produce it spend more than those delivering average beans. If buyers expect consistent, well-fermented, premium-grade cocoa, they must recognize the true cost behind it.

Premium cocoa can only exist if farmers are paid a premium price. Fair pricing is not charityโ€”it is the foundation for quality, sustainability, and the long-term future of cocoa farming.

Sometimes, I wonderโ€”when will any government take the vulnerable, ordinary Ghanaian seriously? When will the cocoa farmerโ€”the backbone of this economyโ€”be treated with dignity?

Weโ€™re being asked to take a pay cut to fix the mismanagement of government appointeesโ€”many of whom have never planted or harvested a single cocoa tree. How is that fair?

Here are the international cocoa prices in 2025, month by month:

- January: 10,750
- February:9,793
- March: 8,080
- April:8,132
- May: 9,000
- June:8,402

Even if we take the lowest price, 8,080, and calculate with a conservative exchange rate of 10.25

8,080 ร— 10.25 ร— 0.70 = GHS 57,974 per ton,
which is GHS 3,710 per 64kg bag.

So how did we end up at GHS 3,228 per bag?

How long will farmers keep paying the price for someone elseโ€™s corruption, negligence, and greed? Our sweat, our sacrifice, our landsโ€ฆ stolen not just by strangers, but by those we elect to serve us.

Maybe I shouldnโ€™t blame the thieves. Maybe the real blame lies with the political goats who blindly cheer them on.

We deserve better. Cocoa farmers are not beggars. We feed this country.

Enough is enough.

Agriculture in Ghana continues to present opportunities for wealth creation, food security, and climate resilience. As more professionals, entrepreneurs, and investors show interest in farming, a common question arises: โ€œCan I successfully run a farm without being physically present?โ€

The answer is Yesโ€”Absentee Farming is Possible.
However, managing a farm remotely comes with a unique set of challenges. The traditional caretaker systemโ€”where landowners leave farms in the hands of local caretakersโ€”is largely informal, unstructured, and lacks accountability. Many absentee farmers have suffered financial losses, poor yields, or complete farm abandonment due to unreliable management.

The core of the problem lies in trust, professionalism, and transparency. Without systems to track performance, measure outputs, or hold caretakers accountable, it becomes nearly impossible for distant farm owners to make informed decisions or demand results.

A New Model is Emerging
To address this gap, a formalised, professional Farm Management Services Firm is being introduced. This firm(FiT Farms) is designed to:
- Provide structured, transparent, and goal-driven farm operations
- Use technology to report progress and monitor performance remotely
- Guarantee returns and protect investments
- Align farming outcomes with sustainability and market access

With this model, absentee farming in Ghana can move from being a risky gamble to a well-managed agribusiness investment. Itโ€™s time to redefine how farms are managed, not just for profit, but for the future of agriculture in Ghana.

Last year, during the peak of the dry season (January to March), over 20 smallholder cocoa farmers in my community urgently needed pruning services. Their farms were due for structural pruningโ€”a critical practice done only once a year to maintain healthy, productive trees. The timing coincided with a lull in galamsey activities due to water scarcity, making many young men available for farm work.

The paradox was striking:
- Labour was available.
- Farm work was ready.
- But cash was missing.

Farmers had no money to pay for the services. At the same time, these young workers, often with families to care for, needed immediate cash and couldnโ€™t afford to wait for post-harvest payments.

I had a choice to make:
Either work on a few farms that could afford to pay cash and at least keep the boys employed, or try to serve all 20 farms on a promiseโ€”without a system to recover costs or sustain operations.

I chose the former.

The restโ€”20 farms averaging 1 hectare eachโ€”were left unpruned. I left for the city, but the situation kept haunting me. If once-a-year structural pruning couldnโ€™t be done due to cash gaps, how about w**ding, which needs to happen at least every three months?

This year, things must changeโ€”for good.

The future of cocoa depends on it.

The 3C Path to Wealth in Cocoa Farming: Cash, Credit & Charity

Narjotey Emmanuel, a young cocoa farmer in Ghana, had a dreamโ€”not just to be rich, but to build lasting wealth and impact. He discovered that true wealth could be built through three pillars: Cash, Credit, and Charity.

Cash was his starting point. He saved a portion of every harvest income, no matter how small. He tracked expenses, lived modestly, and reinvested part of his earnings into expanding his farm. Slowly, his savings grew, giving him control and peace of mind.

Then came credit. He accessed a small grant. But instead of spending it, he used it to provide essential farm services โ€” pruning, fertilizer application, w**d control โ€” on credit to struggling smallholder cocoa farmers. These farmers paid him back during the harvest season. In doing so, he built strong relationships, trust, and even a cooperative. This opened bigger doors: access to agricultural loans, more grants, and eventually interest from investors who saw the modelโ€™s potential.

At the charity level, he didn't just give handouts โ€” he gave knowledge. Through his businessโ€™s Corporate Social Responsibility efforts, he trained local youth and smallholder cocoa farmers in livelihood diversification. From chili pepper intercropping to biomass value additions and economic Trees-on-Farm, he introduced income-generating alternatives that made farming more lucrative than illegal mining (galamsey). Inspired, his community began transitioning away from galamsey into full-time, sustainable agriculture.

He didnโ€™t just build wealth โ€” he built a legacy.
Through these 3Csโ€”Cash, Credit, and Charityโ€”Narjotey didn't just become wealthy. He built a legacy.

We are on a mission to rediscover purpose, to write a story that may go unnoticedโ€”but holds meaning too deep to ignore. We want to live a legacy that touches hearts, rooted in love for nature and the call to protect it. To inspire a life in harmony with the earthโ€”where conservation isn't just a duty, but a shared way of being. An impact others can feel, relate to, and carry forward. .

Food-Dean Sustainable Cocoa Farming Initiative

Food-Dean is aiming to revolutionize cocoa farming through sustainable agricultural practices, environmental stewardship, and innovative farming methods that enhance food security, generate additional income, and strengthen climate resilience in the cocoa sector.

By integrating agroforestry systems, we cultivate cocoa alongside economic tree species, coconut, cocoyam, and plantain, promoting biodiversity, improving soil fertility, and mitigating the effects of climate change.

Our initiative also ensures zero biomass waste, transforming agricultural residues into valuable products such as wood chips, biomass briquettes and organic fertilizers. This not only generates additional revenue for farmers but also reduces deforestation and protects our forest resources.

Through regenerative agriculture and eco-friendly solutions, Food-Dean is empowering farmers to transition toward a more sustainable and profitable future while contributing to global climate action.
