Quality Cocoa Bean Production Requires Investment โ and Deserves a Premium Price
Producing quality cocoa beans is not by chance. It is a deliberate, skillful, and cost-intensive process that farmers must follow all year. From pruning and w**ding to shade control, pest management, and applying fertilizer or organic manure, each step requires labour, tools, and money. These tasks must be done on time, especially during the off-season when farmers have the least income.
Quality also depends on careful harvesting. Farmers must pick only ripe pods, break them properly, and ferment the beans for the right number of days. Drying must be clean and controlled to avoid mould and smoky flavours. Achieving this level of quality requires knowledge, labour, drying surfaces, and sometimes improved equipmentโall of which increase production costs.
Because quality cocoa demands more effort and investment, farmers who produce it spend more than those delivering average beans. If buyers expect consistent, well-fermented, premium-grade cocoa, they must recognize the true cost behind it.
Premium cocoa can only exist if farmers are paid a premium price. Fair pricing is not charityโit is the foundation for quality, sustainability, and the long-term future of cocoa farming.
