A Follower Asked: 'Why Do Some Sows Give Birth to Just 1 or 2 Piglets?'

My brother, you asked why some sows will go through all the pregnancy stress and give you just one or two piglets. I understand how painful it is because I’ve been there myself. Let me tell you the truth, not every problem in pig farming starts the day you notice it. Sometimes the wahala started long ago, but we didn’t catch it on time.

You see, when a sow is not properly prepared for mating, she will give you disappointment in the farrowing pen. It’s not magic, it’s body condition. If you mate a sow that is too thin, too weak, or even stressed, don’t expect her to give you plenty piglets. She can’t produce what her body doesn’t support. Some farmers will see a sow on heat and rush to mate her immediately because they’re counting months. But is the sow’s body ready? That’s the real question.

Another thing we must talk about is heat detection. Many farmers are missing the correct heat timing. You’ll see the sow standing and think it’s time, but you’ve missed the peak. If you don’t mate her at the right time, you may only get one or two pregnancies. And you’ll start thinking it’s a spiritual problem. It’s not. It’s simple timing.

Now let’s face the boar issue. That boar you’re using, is he even active enough? Some boars are tired. Some are overused. Some are even related to the sow, yes, inbreeding. And when you keep using that same family line, small litters will start becoming normal on your farm. That’s how inbreeding quietly k!lls a farm.

Another reason is infections we don’t see with our eyes. Some infections don’t show any obvious sign but are silently reducing your sow’s ability to carry a full litter. Before you know it, the embryos d!e inside, and she gives birth to only one or two.

Age is also a factor. First time gilts can give small litters, which is understandable. But if an older sow that has given you 10 piglets before suddenly drops to 2, it’s time to sit up and ask what has changed. Maybe it’s age, maybe it’s management.

So, my advice is that you need to slow down on rushing sows to mate. Let them build body condition. Observe your heat signs well. Don’t use a tired or related boar repeatedly. Cleanliness and infection control should be part of your daily routine. And very importantly, watch your bloodlines. Inbreeding is real, and it’s silent.

I know it’s frustrating when you feed a sow for 4 months, and she rewards you with just two piglets, but farming doesn’t respond to feelings. It responds to careful planning and close observation. What you put in is what you get out.

I hope this clears things up. If you’ve had this experience before, I’d love to hear how you handled it. Let’s share and learn from each other. Farming is not guesswork; it’s constant learning.
