TOPIC: KEEP ETERNITY IN FOCUS

KEY VERSE:

MESSAGE:
American historian William Hendrick Van Loon once sought to describe eternity and came up with this legend: "High up in the North, in the land called Svthjod, there stands a rock. It is one hundred miles high and ten miles wide. Once every one thousand years, a little bird comes to this rock to sharpen its beak. When the rock has thus been worn away (from this activity), then a single day of eternity will have gone by."

Today's passage explains the transitory nature of life and the futility of human endeavours without acknowledging God. Surprisingly, men hardly learn from history but keep pursuing shadows. "What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun?"

Eternity is viewed and perceived differently by various schools of thought. To some, it is a mirage, a religious concoction by religious overlords to enslave the ignorant and keep them as perpetual stooges. Others, superstitiously, assume people reincarnate after death, which is reflected in the names given to offspring at birth in some climes.

What, then, is eternity, and how does one live in its light? From the biblical point of view, eternity is associated with timelessness, a realm not bound by time, where the past, the present, and the future meet. It is associated with infinity. That is, an existence without end or bounds. It is also explained as the perpetual existence of God. It is the nature or attribute of God. The creation story relates man to God; like Him, all humans will exist forever. Apostle Paul corroborates the same truth in Acts 17:28: "For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring." The physical body houses the soul and spirit. When death comes, the soul leaves the body and will continue to live forever, either in heaven, with God, or in hell, with Satan, in a horrible place meant for those who reject the mercy of God through Christ.

Life is worthwhile if a man sets his affection on the things above. Only Christ Jesus offers peace and pardon with eternal bliss for those who turn from earthly pursuits and follow Him. Outside Him, there is crisis and hopelessness after life in this age. There is no satisfaction in sin. In the long run, pleasure quickly turns to poison, resulting in sorrow and regret. Let us prepare for the promised peaceful and endless eternity, guaranteed only through Christ.

TOPIC: DOES JESUS CARE?

MESSAGE:
The hymn that shares the same title as today's topic was written by a Christian who may be rightly considered a graduate from the school of grief. The writer, Frank E. Graeff, a Methodist minister, experienced significant loss, including the death of his parents and three of his siblings. Consequently, he struggled with grief and doubt. He found solace as he turned to God's word and realised that God is touched with our grief.

In today's text, the Lord undertakes to keep, care for and defend His chosen ones. First, He assures that He will punish Leviathan, the piercing and crooked serpent that had terrorised them. And having the great threat out of the way, God's people would dwell peacefully, secured in His caring arms, night and day. Then the vineyard of God would be engulfed in a responsive song of victory.

The precious promise captured in our key verse, which primarily pertains to Israel, also applies to the church of God. Today, the church is God's favoured vineyard. She needs not seek the fence of thorns (the energy of the flesh) for the all-powerful Jehovah, her protector, has guaranteed her defence and fruitfulness at all seasons. Neither can she survive without His grace. It, however, takes obedient submission and faith for us to continue to enjoy this blessed peace with God. When He chastises His own, it is not for their destruction but for their good. Ultimate deliverance will, however, come when the rapturous trumpet shall sound and the Lord will draw out His people from all corners of the world unto Himself. Then shall the church of Christ finally rest from the accuser of the brethren and his human cohorts.

If you are part of God's vineyard, be content to know that the Almighty God is your protector, preserver, and provider. He will take care of you in every situation - in the night of affliction as well as in the day of abundance. Only walk humbly and be at peace
with Him. If you are yet outside the umbrella of this divine providence, you need to turn to the Lord by repenting of your sins, placing your faith in Christ Jesus and taking Him as your personal Lord and Saviour.

TOPIC: PRICE OF LIBERTY

27. So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares?

28. He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up?

29. But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them.

30. Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.

MESSAGE:
Thomas Jefferson is often credited with the quote: "The price of freedom is eternal vigilance." England was almost paying a heavy price for non-vigilance, laxity and complacency in the middle of the second world war because of the false impression being created by many that the war was all but won owing to the partial success on land. It was called "the optimistic nuisance." Recruiting fell off and many became lax. To ensure they secured victory and liberty from the looming slavery that might come if the N***s overran England, the department of state had to issue grave warnings to checkmate the erroneous impression that the war was drawing to a victorious end.

In this passage, Christ's warning cannot but be timely to believers as the world enters a frightening phase in its race to the end of this age. Believers that wish to run the race successfully to the end without sustaining any injury or falling prey to the adversary need be wary of the enemy's ploy to make them relapse into self-indulgence and unprofitable 'rest' along the way. Good seeds were sown by this man in his own field but he was not vigilant enough. He must have gone home to take a little rest after the rigorous exercise of cultivating the land and planting good seeds. Unfortunately for him, the enemy came at a period he was prone to fatigue, weakness, weariness and vulnerable to attack.

God's children are engaged in an incessant warfare. Our adversary, the devil, is an implacable foe. In our warfare, no armistice can be declared. Believers must not cease to be watchful and wakeful. The songwriter, Charlotte Elliott (1789-1871), couches the warning: Christian, seek not yet repose, Hear thy gracious Savior say; Thou art in the midst of foes: Watch and pray.

Believers must be on guard day and night against the tares of the wicked being sown during the slumbering hours and carefree moments of relaxation, especially after spiritual exploits. The enemy is relentlessly looking for such opportunities to perpetrate his mischievous acts. You are the one to stay awake and watch over your life, family and territory. With Christ, victory is guaranteed!

TOPIC: FOOLISH, BUT WISE

KEY VERSE:

27. But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;

28. And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are:

29. That no flesh should glory in his presence.

30. But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:

MESSAGE:
Harry S. Truman had only served 82 days as America's vice president, with little exposure and experience, when President Franklin D. Roosevelt died suddenly in April 1945. Truman was promptly sworn in as the 34th president of the United States. Many assumed (wrongly) that he was a dumb country folk who would be a totally useless, lame-duck president. They were wrong. Truman turned out to be very strong, presiding over US victory in the Pacific with the unconditional surrender of the imperial empire of Japan. He implemented the Marshall Plan in the aftermath of World War 2 to rebuild the economy of Western Europe and established the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) alongside the victorious allies.

It is according to God's superior wisdom that the lowly and humble are exalted and the self-exalted are humbled. We learn from the omniscient God's dealings with His creatures that His wisdom is incomparable and His knowledge limitless. In our passage today, Paul the apostle was on point when he described God's way of choosing those He uses. He employs and fields people who are weak, foolish and base, by the world's definition, and turns them into great instruments in His hands.

God is teaching us that victory is not achieved by human might or wisdom, but by His Spirit. Powerful people such as Pharaoh, Nebuchadnezzar, Herod and other earthly kings who arrogated power to themselves were humbled by God. Only God deserves the glory in our lives. We also learn that believers need to be humble, holy and dependent on God for success in life and ministry and that each of us has a calling from God. Let us humbly use our different gifts from God as He directs us in life and ministry. We should also realise that every good success comes from God, and He has His own appointed time for us. Our passage also warns against self-glorification, that "no flesh should glory in his presence."

We do not need to force a situation to our own profit even if it yields a temporary advantage because God could have a better plan or a greater reward for us. Current disappointment might be a way of making us acquire requisite experience, learn from our mistakes or exercise patience for a better outcome that God had planned. We should not engage in a race with unbelievers whose values and ultimate destiny are different from ours. God's leading might appear unreasonable by human understanding, but true believers walk with God by faith, not by human rationality. Once we are sure that it is God leading us, we shall get to His desired destination.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: God's wisdom is beyond human understanding but wholly dependable.

TOPIC: NOTHING NEW

KEY VERSE:

MESSAGE:
The fashion industry is characterised by cyclical trends, where past styles and aesthetics regularly reappear, often with slight modifications, creating the illusion of "new" while referencing the past. This phenomenon is sometimes referred to as the "20-year rule," where fashion trends tend to resurface after a two-decade gap. Fashion trends are not always forward-looking; they often revisit past styles, incorporating elements from different eras and subcultures. The core idea is that humanity is cyclical, and new discoveries or experiences are often simply variations of what has already occurred.

Well, not everyone might agree with this assertion. Yet, Solomon wrote from experience and was also inspired by the Spirit of God. He had seen it all. In his quest to know the particular things that man should pursue here on earth, he went to bizarre lengths, sampling everything that gave him pleasure, including marrying a staggering 700 wives in addition to 300 concubines. In the end, he concluded that all is vanity. He planted vineyards, built houses and orchards, he had slaves, he was the richest king of all climes and was the wisest man of his day.

The world is too distracted to settle down and consider what is said in this passage about the transient nature of things. People are busy pursuing what they perceive would give them joy and pleasure. The fashion craze is buzzing globally. In our mad pursuit of new things, we end up eventually with nothing but an empty display of our carnality. Models have removed every bit of clothing, until they now almost appear naked. Music icons are adored by a revelling crowd who have no time to pay attention to satanic emblems on display in their shows. They distance themselves from the Scriptures and are quick to reject anything they suspect is designed to take away their 'freedom'. The women want to kill their unborn babies in the name of maintaining control over their bodies. And politicians, in a desperate bid to win elections, enshrine these excesses in their manifestos.

It is time to sit down and take a critical look at the emptiness Solomon speaks about. There is a void and emptiness deep down in our hearts. This void can only be filled by God Himself. If only we can take a break and think deeply, we'll agree with Solomon that truly, there's no new thing under the earth. Solomon concludes later in this last book authored by him that the best thing to do is to fear God and keep His commandments, which he describes as the whole duty of man (Ecclesiastes 12:13,14).

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: It is foolhardy to pursue passing earthly gains at the expense of heavenly, permanent glory.

TOPIC: END-TIME SIGNS

KEY VERSE:

19. They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.

MESSAGE:
Every time a young boy went over to his friend's house to play, he saw his friend's grandmother sitting quietly, reading her Bible. He asked his friend why she was always reading it, and the friend said he didn't know for sure but thought that she might be studying for her finals.

We may as well need information that might help us start studying for the real finals. There is no doubt that we are currently living in the very last days of the last times. John, the aged disciple of Jesus Christ, wrote this epistle to believers in his day, warning them about the last times and the coming antichrist. He used the incident of the backsliding and apostasy of some of the believers in his time to illustrate how close they were to the end – the departure of some from the faith being one of the signs of the end-time. This closely relates to what he heard from Jesus himself, where He predicted the incident of the love of many waxing cold as one of the signs of the end-time.

It is believed that John wrote this epistle between 90 and 95 AD, predicting the end of the world. There are other end-time signs predicted in the Bible that are not specifically mentioned in this short passage. For instance, it is indicated that there will be wars, political instability, famines, earthquakes, betrayal, hatred for Christians, imprisonment, death, and a decline in morality. False prophets and heretical teachings are also mentioned. The spread of the gospel has already occurred, facilitated by the internet and social media. Some churches today are like a clubhouse, with liberal and progressive bishops ordaining anyone into the priesthood, including people with outlandish beliefs and practices.

The end is truly near. Believers need to look up; our Redeemer is coming. We need to keep our garments pure and white and our hearts fixed on things above as we expect the Lord to take His own. The rapture is the next event the saints now earnestly await. Closely followed by the Great Tribulation, where the Antichrist will be fully revealed. How ready are you?

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: It is too risky to remain a lukewarm believer at this last hour.

TOPIC: UNGODLY INFLUENCE

KEY VERSE:
"And he walked in the way of the kings of Israel, like as did the house of Ahab: for he had the daughter of Ahab to wife: and he wrought that which was evil in the eyes of the LORD." - (2 Chronicles 21:6).

14. Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.

15. For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish:

16. To the one we are the savour of death unto death; and to the other the savour of life unto life. And who is sufficient for these things?

17. For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ.

MESSAGE:
Jezebel, the wife of Ahab, king of Israel was a Phoenician princess, daughter of Ethbaal king of the Zidonians. She reduced her husband to a mere puppet and established the Phoenician worship on a grand scale in the court of Ahab with no less than 450 prophets of Baal and 400 prophets of the grooves. The prophets of Jehovah were attacked on her orders and killed. Her name represents all that is ungodly, crafty, malicious, vengeful and cruel.

Jehoshaphat, a righteous king, set the stage for corruption in the royal family of Judah through his unequal yoke with the idolatrous ruling family of Israel. Although he was a good man, his friendship with Ahab and his wife, Jezebel, paved the way for marriage between Jehoram his son and the daughter of Jezebel. Jehoram's killing of his siblings in our text, his idolatry and wickedness were all the characteristics he learnt from Ahab and Jezebel. Things started falling apart for Jehoram and Judah because the way of transgressors is hard. It was so sad that such a God-fearing king could provide a fertile ground for evil through his wrong choice of a friend. To underline the seriousness of ungodly marriage in the ruin of Jehohanan, we read that "he walked... as did the house of Ahab: for he had the daughter of Ahab to wife: and he wrought that which was evil in the eyes of the LORD" (2 Chronicles 21:6).

This is a lesson, especially to unmarried believers today. Jehoram's reign was a failure, and he died "without being desired" (verse 20) because of one mistake: he married a worldly woman - Ahab's daughter. Unholy alliances always lead to compromise and spiritual disaster.

Paul wrote, "Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers" but "…be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing" (2 Corinthians 6:14,17). To cleave to God, one must first separate from the world!

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Who you get married to will either make you or mar your destiny.

TOPIC: NEW NATURE AND A WORTHY WALK

KEY VERSE:
"I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called." - (Ephesians 4:1).

1. I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called,

2. With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love;

3. Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

MESSAGE:
During the reign of King Karl 6 in Sweden, there was an attempt to domesticate moose as an alternative to horses for use in cavalry. The king sought a more formidable presence to intimidate enemy forces. However, it became evident that moose were too dangerous to manage, prone to disease, and had specific dietary needs that were challenging to meet. Additionally, their intelligence posed a logistical issue, as they would avoid areas where other moose had died, complicating their deployment in warfare.

The saying "a cassock cannot make a priest" emphasises the difference between outward appearance and true inward value. A cassock, often worn by clergy, does not automatically confer priesthood on the wearer. This further explains the difficulty in attempting to use the moose in battle instead of the horse. Paul described himself as a prisoner of the Lord. He had the option of living a free life like others, but he chose to invest his life in serving the Master despite the risks. He enjoined Ephesian believers to walk worthy of their vocation, emphasising the importance of bearing the right fruit and living in unity with the brethren. He emphasised the beauty of living the new life in Christ, in unity with the brethren, with all lowliness, meekness and longsuffering.

It all begins with the process leading to the salvation experience. A penitent seeker begins by sensing the need for salvation in the heart, follows that up with genuine repentance and confession of sin, and places his faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, accepting Him as Saviour and Lord. The absence of this foundation has produced the so-called believers, who lack the grace to live righteously in the present evil world. It has also given occasion for people to doubt the claims of Christians, a situation worsened by the appearance of many false ministers whose character and practices are at variance with the gospel.

You need to observe the following: Do not open up to people who claim to be servants of God until you see proof of their calling and Christian character. It is also not safe to lay hands suddenly on anyone who claims to have a call, without first verifying them. Furthermore, we need to recognise that conversion is necessary, so we don't put forward the moose instead of a horse.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: If he can't be safely imitated, he shouldn't be tolerated in the pulpit.

TOPIC: HUMILITY IN GREATNESS

KEY VERSE:

MESSAGE:
Emperor Gaius Caesar Augustus Germanicus, also called Caligula, actively promoted his own worship during his brief reign as Roman emperor from AD 37 until his assassination in AD 41. He famously demanded and received adoration as a living god. He was quoted as saying, "Remember that I have the right to do anything to anybody". He humiliated his senators by making them run behind his litter or forcing them to fight for his amusement.

Unlike Emperor Caligula, David knew his limits as Israel's king. The Lord promised to make him "higher than the kings of the earth" in our text, yet he constantly prayed to God in humility. "He shall cry unto me, Thou art my father, my God, and the rock of my salvation". This virtue of constantly depending on God and ascribing greatness and supremacy to Him was what preserved King David on the throne, despite several attempts on his life.

Humility comes from the heart. It is a product of grace through heart circumcision. It manifests the virtue of self-abasement and resentment for the praises of men. Unlike popular thinking, where the rich and powerful are said to be inherently proud while the poor and weak are supposedly meek and humble, the state of the heart is the determining factor, and not the richness or emptiness of the pockets. We have seen poor people and even beggars, whose character and boisterous nature are repulsive. And conversely, we have seen people of power and influence maintain such a commodious attitude that draws everyone to them.

God resists the proud and gives grace to the humble. Like David, we are bound to remember our little beginnings, no matter what heights we may have attained in life presently. We must, in humility, acknowledge God and ascribe all greatness to Him alone. And if, for any reason, our talents, knowledge and achievements in life inadvertently draw unwarranted attention to us, we should politely insist that God is behind it all. We should avoid big names that kill a puppy. We must reject all adulation and hide ourselves behind the cross whenever the world attempts to deify us.
