02. Choose The Type Of Bird

Poultry farm owners rear many types of birds. Your small poultry farm may start by focusing on two to three birds and then include more birds later as the business grows. Mostly, poultry farms raise birds such as domestic fowl or chicken as broilers and layers, duck, goose, quail, guinea fowl, turkey, pigeon, and peacock.

You should also determine whether to rear broilers or layers. This is basically the choice to start farming for meat production or egg production.

Here Are 9 Rules from MHB DINHO for Starting Your Own Poultry Farming in Ghana

01. Choose Your Poultry Sector

Poultry farming is a wide industry. Basically, there are two types of the farming you can choose from – broilers and layers. Broilers are chicken that you raise for meat. Layers are chicken that you raise for eggs. Then, there is the business of incubating eggs and raising chicks.

Many chicken farms do business in multiple sectors. So, decide if you want to operate in all sectors or you want to restrict your business to just one or two sectors of your choice specially in the beginning.

Following are the niches you can choose from.

Meat production (Broilers breeding)

Egg production (Layers breeding)

Poultry feed production

Chicken breeding (Hatchery)

Egg and meat processing

Poultry

Poultry production consists of breeding chickens, ducks, Guinea fowl, turkey, ostrich, pigeon and quail. Chicken breeds comprise 60%-80% of Ghana’s poultry production.

There are two main sectors of the chicken industry: chickens that are bred to produce eggs are called “layers” (They start laying from 18th-20th week and continue for 50-52 weeks) and chickens that are raised to be slaughtered are called “broilers” (They are fast growing and mature between 6-8 weeks).

The large poultry farms manage their own feed mills, hatcheries and parent stocks. Smaller poultry farms depend on merchants for chicken feed and other supplies.

To prevent the spread of Avian Influenza, Infectious Bursal disease and Newcastle disease in poultry, access to public or private veterinary services providing vaccinations has improved.

There are 4 hatcheries in the Ashanti region and 2 in the Greater Accra region that produce day-old chicks and Guinea keets for commercial production.

12 feed mill companies and 4 poultry slaughterhouses are located throughout the regions; two of the poultry slaughterhouses provide mobile services.

Small poultry farms build small cages or pens to house the chickens and the commercial poultry farms house the chickens in poultry barns or 40 ft x 500 ft chicken houses.

Cattle Production

Cattle are the livestock species predominantly kept by both local farmers and Fulani herdsmen in Ghana.

They are commonly kept for meat and this accounts for about 33% of all locally produced meat. Recent research findings published by the Ministry of Food and Agriculture and some NGOs have encouraged some farmers to venture into the rearing of diary animals.

There are a number of cattle species in Ghana but the dominant ones are; Sanga, West African short horn, Ndama and their crosses.

Cattle may be classified into:

Beef cattle for meat production
Dairy cattle for milk production
Dual purpose cattle for beef and milk
Raising Cattle
Things to consider before starting cattle production

Breeding stock (1 bull – 25 cows)
Housing and equipment
Feeding
Health management
Many cattle farmers integrate the raising of their livestock with the cultivation of oil palm, citrus or coconut crops because this process yields a higher stock husbandry.

WHY GOAT FARMING?

Goat farming is a very lucrative business because nothing in a goat goes to waste. The meat is money, the skin is money, the hair and even the poo in money.

Products From Goats Include:

✍Meat

✍Milk

✍Milk products (yoghurt, butter, cheese)

✍Skins for making clothes, shoes, bags

✍Hair for making judges wigs

✍Manure for fertilizing crop fields and fish ponds

✍Other products include horns used in manufacturing buttons, bone –meal

In addition to direct cash income that accrues from the sale of meat, milk, hair and by products

✍Goats have economic advantage over larger ruminants because they are cheap to buy, hence they provide an opportunity for vulnerable people to own goats

✍Goats multiply very rapidly and flock sizes increase in a relative period of time forming a significant part of a family’s capital assets

✍Goats are small in size and this makes them convenient to provide meat for family

✍Goats can readily be sold off for cash to meet family needs in an emergency, therefore they are the first step out of poverty and insecurity in a case of calamities.

Animal production in Ghana plays a major economic, social and cultural role in the lives and livelihoods of small holder farmers, processors and traders. It is a source of protein, hence contributes to balanced human nutrition.

It acts as a bank and insurance in times of urgent financial needs, since it generates cash income. It also helps to maintain soil fertility and structure through manure.

Animals provides draught power particularly in the northern region, which enables bullocks-owning households to cultivate 60% more land than those who do not.

So lets invest in agriculture because it really pays!!!
