Following the winter rains in Greece, the wild greens known collectively as Horta begin to emerge in the countryside. As I could happily eat a small mountain of Horta every day, Kyria Eleni thought that it was high time that I learn to forage for my own in the olive groves. With a deft flick of the wrist, she slices the crown from the root and moves on to the next. The root remains in the ground and the cycle continues year after year. If you find yourself driving around the Greek countryside this time of year and spot people bent over and scanning the ground with a plastic bag in one hand and a knife in the other now you know why.

Theofanis Tagaras passed away peacefully at home on Sunday at noon. He was 95. Fanis loved our olive groves and producing the best olive oil, but above all he loved and was beloved by his wife, his children, his grandchildren, his extended family and community. He climbed ladders in the groves and personally supervised our olive harvests into his late 80s. After a serious bout with COVID that hospitalised him twice, Fanis continued to take a keen interest in the management of the groves and directed the harvesting and pressing of our olives from home. He was surrounded by family on Sunday morning and knew that we were headed to the groves to complete our olive harvest and preserve his legacy. He was leaving no business unfinished. We will miss him terribly but take solace knowing that he lived a long and full life. Forever curious, Fanis loved traveling, taking photographs and trying new foods. He was a huge fan of the USA, never forgetting the assistance provided to Greece under the Marshall Plan in the aftermath of WWII and the Greek Civil War that followed. Fanis was so proud that the olive oil bearing his family name could be found on the shelves of shops around Los Angeles and beyond such as The Cheese Store of Beverly Hills, Joan’s on Third and Pierre Lafond. We laid Fanis to rest today high on a hill above Agios Vasileios where we know he will continue to keep an eye on our groves.
