The Aussie and the Fat French Peasant

The Aussie and the Fat French Peasant Donkey farm in the stunning gorge country near Kardamyli in the Peloponnese. Only 3 km from the sea and one hour from the snow capped mountains.

Visitors welcome by appointment. We moved to Agia Sofia from Australia in 2013 and have built a beautiful stone house in the historical Byzantine style of the area, among the olive groves on the terraces above Kardamyli. Just below the house we are soon building a small holiday house which will be available for long term or holiday rentals. The COVID19 lockdown has delayed our building plans this

year but we will be able to start again in the near future and the holiday house should be completed by summer 2022. It is self contained with full kitchen, open plan living area and outdoor terraces. It sleeps 2-4 for a wonderful walking holiday through the cypress clad gorges or a relaxing break enjoying the panoramic view of the bay of Messina. The beach is only 3 km away and the villages of Kardamyli and Stoupa have many cafes, restaurants and quaint shops. If you are an artist or writer looking for an inspiring haven where you can concentrate on your creative work then look no further. We are both artists who enjoy the peace and tranquillity of nature. The nearest village, Agia Sofia, has only 28 residents and the house is surrounded by a bird reserve and olive groves with a view that takes your breath away. We have a plan to host sculpture and painting workshops in the future. Our adventures in Greece have brought us the joy of rescuing three donkeys and a dog. We have welcomed a baby donkey to the herd earlier this year and have another one on the way. We have very productive chickens as well. Who knows, donkey treks might be possible in the future. At the moment we can offer a volunteer experience through HelpX. If you are interested in coming to help us with the work on our property in exchange for accomodation, breakfast and dinner, then please contact us through the HelpX site. Our profile is https://helpx.net/host/1642847EN
With the afternoons and weekends free time you can explore everything that the area has to offer - swimming, hiking, cafes and restaurants etc. or just lie in a hammock and relax.

Aussies in a strange land

Working in Australia in schools, universities, community organisations and government departments and living in the big city brought us to the point of retirement where we both wanted to return to a simpler life. Self sufficiency and sustainability as a way of life has always appealed to us and our years of cruising on ocean going yachts gave us both a taste for travel to overseas destinations. It was inevitable that we would end up in Europe somewhere, living the dream.

We moved to Agia Sofia, in the Mani region of the Peloponnese, from Australia in 2013 and have built a beautiful stone house in the historical Byzantine style of the area, among the olive groves on the terraces above Kardamyli. We have now completed the building and moved into the house in September 2018. We are enjoying the ambience and the seclusion of our piece of Paradise . Our next project is to build a small eco friendly micro holiday house/studio which will nestle into the hill below us. This house will sleep up to 4; for or a wonderful romantic “back to nature” holiday with lovely wildflower walks through the cypress clad gorges in Spring; or a relaxing break enjoying the panoramic view of the Bay of Messina. The beach is only 3 km away and the villages of Kardamyli and Stoupa have many cafes, restaurants and quaint shops.

Our artist and writer friends..........if you are looking for an inspiring haven where you can concentrate on your creative work, then look no further; we have the place for you. We are both artists who enjoy the peace and tranquillity of nature. The nearest village of Agia Sofia has only 20 residents and the house is surrounded by a bird reserve and olive groves with a view of the sea and mountains so beautiful that it takes your breath away. We have a plan to host sculpture and painting workshops in the future.

Our adventures in Greece have brought us the joy of rescuing two donkeys and two dogs. We had never planned to have donkeys but couldn’t resist their gentle loving personalities. We bought our first one from travelling gypsies and have not looked back. We plan to add to our menagerie, breeding from the donkeys and we have also added chickens to the mix. Who knows, donkey treks might be possible in the future. We are very keen to re-establish the donkey as a feature of the Mani. Since the advent of tractors and small agricultural machinery donkeys have progressively disappeared from this area. Farmers have sold their donkeys as dog meat, salami and hides. Their cultural significance as beasts of burden has been lost and we want to bring it back to life. Some of our art events will be focused on our donkeys.
