Last night we went back to Marmita, and I have to admit, I had quite high expectations. It had been many years since my last visit, but Marmita used to be one of my absolute favourite places to eat.
Over the years, though, getting into town — and especially finding parking — has become a bit of a mission, and the last couple of times I tried to book, getting a table proved surprisingly difficult. So when we finally made it back, I was really looking forward to seeing whether it was still as special as I remembered.
And visually, it absolutely is. The ambience at Marmita is gorgeous — the setting is beautiful, with lots of little details and interesting touches to discover around the room. The tables were beautifully set and the whole place has that effortlessly stylish, cosy feel that makes you want to settle in for the evening.
The menu was considerably smaller than I remembered, although there were still plenty of vegetarian options. We started with the Mastelo cheese (which I absolutely loved), beetroot fritters and a beetroot salad. For my main, I went for the vegan moussaka, while some of our friends tried the leeks in egg and lemon sauce.
The service was excellent throughout and, overall, the food was good. But… and this is where I found myself a little disappointed. Nothing really wowed me. There were dishes I enjoyed, but I didn’t leave thinking about them afterwards or feeling that “I need to come back and have that again” feeling I remember having years ago.
It also felt quite expensive compared with some of the other restaurants of a similar style that I’ve been to recently.
So, perhaps unfairly, I went into Marmita with a lot of nostalgia — and maybe that played a part — but this visit just didn’t live up to my memories. I’m glad we finally made it back, and I can still appreciate how beautiful the place is, but I think Marmita has officially slipped out of my top five.
Sometimes restaurants change… and sometimes it’s just your tastes that change. Either way, I was expecting a little more magic this time.
