Some wineries make wine. Others try to recover an entire way of living. 😌🇪🇸🥂
That’s what fascinated me about , with each sip unveiling a different chapter of its heroic story.
Hidden in the Montmell mountains of Catalonia, more than 600 meters above sea level and surrounded by forests and Mediterranean biodiversity, Can Sumoi is not simply a minimal intervention wine project. Led by Pepe Raventós, 21st generation of the Raventós family, it is a long-term effort to reconnect viticulture with rural life, memory, architecture and continuity.
After decades of abandonment, old vineyards, traditional farmhouses and forgotten agricultural landscapes are slowly being brought back to life.
Part of this restoration also includes the revival of the old cooperative winery, reconnecting the project with the agricultural and social memory of the region.
The philosophy of the project speaks about restoring human presence in the countryside, protecting biodiversity, reviving local agricultural culture and preserving a slower agricultural rhythm shaped by people, animals and manual work in the vineyards.
The vineyards are farmed organically and biodynamically, harvest is done by hand and the wines are fermented with indigenous yeasts, allowing the landscape to remain at the center of the expression. And you can feel this intention inside the glass.
La Rosa 2025, a blend of Sumoll and Xarel·lo, balances between high-altitude mountain freshness and Mediterranean softness. Vibrant, textured, alive, expresses the energy of landscape through native varieties and minimal intervention.
The Xarel·lo 2025 feels more grounded and precise, shaped by altitude, forests and the slower rhythm of the Montmell landscape. Freshness, tension and purity come together in a way that feels deeply connected to place.
Fermented with indigenous yeasts, allow the vineyard to speak honestly, without much intervention masking the identity of the terroir.
Wine can preserve landscapes, stories and people before they disappear. And maybe that's what makes certain wines feel truly alive..
