Zhang Yanzhi’s journey in Bordeaux laid the foundation for his reputation as a transformative winemaker in China. His time in France bridged technical academic mastery with high-level commercial experience in the global wine trade. In 2002, Zhang Yanzhi became the only Asian student admitted to Bordeaux Segalen University (now part of the University of Bordeaux).

Ningxia sits on a similar latitude to Bordeaux, providing long hours of intense sunlight and dry conditions. Rather than simply copying French taste profiles, Zhang utilizes his Bordeaux training to implement strict quality management. He uses advanced smart-winery technology to track everything from soil humidity to sunlight metrics.

This is the result of 12 years of unwavering dedication, this is just the beginning in the jounrey of crafting great wine.
Guanlan Vineyard Grand Vin 2017
Varieties: 89% Cab Sauv, 19% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot
This wine shows intense spice notes layered with aromas of cedar, leather, cinnamon, nutmeg and blackberries. This is a powerful yet extremely elegant wine with firm tannins and long finish.
Guanlan Vineyard Cuvee Faucon 2020
Varieties: 76% Can Sauv, 21.5% Syrah, 2.5% Petit Verdot
This wine shows beautiful aromas of dark chocolate, mushroom and cedar evolving to notes of leather. Concentrated and full bodied, its tannins are firm yet velvety; presenting a youthful yet elegant & powerful wine with persistent finish.

Tasmania’s Sullivans Cove Distillery, one of the world’s most sought-after names in whisky, has officially launched in Hong Kong for the first time through a new distribution partnership with Northeast.

The launch marks the first official availability of Sullivans Cove whisky in Hong Kong, with a highly limited allocation of selected expressions now released to a small number of premium hospitality, specialist retail and whisky-focused trade partners.

Founded in Hobart, Tasmania in 1994, Sullivans Cove helped pioneer Australian single malt whisky on the world stage and remains internationally recognised for its uncompromising single cask philosophy, long-term maturation approach, and distinctly Tasmanian sense of place.

The distillery became the first producer outside Scotland or Japan to win World’s Best Single Malt at the World Whiskies Awards in 2014, helping redefine global perceptions of where world-class whisky could come from. Since then, Sullivans Cove has gone on to achieve three more separate World’s Best titles at the awards - a distinction unmatched by any other distillery.

Most recently, the distillery was awarded World’s Best Single Cask Single Malt Whisky at the 2026 World Whiskies Awards.

Newton Johnson Vineyards is owned and managed by the Newton Johnson family. The farm is based in the upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley near the seaside town of Hermanus, an hour and a half’s drive out of Cape Town.

This is a popular tourist destination, famous for some of the most spectacular land-based whale watching in the world lush indigenous fynbos, a floral kingdom, home to 1500 species and exclusive to the Cape, mountain walks and bike trails.

It is not only home to this special family but, in the words of Neal Martin, “to some of the best Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs you will find in the Capelands”.

Last weekend - we travelled back to Ningxia to introduce the area to our trade & media friends. A huge thank you to for organising a fantastic tour of Xige Estate and more. You fed & watered us like there was no tomorrow and we already miss it.
You also showed us the diversity of the region in terms of terroir, varietals & winemaking methods. Needless to say we will be back with more friends of the trade.

This week we have the true pleasure to welcome back Jane Hunter OBE, often referred to as the "First Lady of New Zealand Wine". This is the family story of Marlborough - a pioneer and instrumental in introducing Sauvignon Blanc to the global market.

She was also the first woman inducted into the NZ Wine Hall of Fame in 2013.
