On 19 September, the OPUS Concert Series returns to Hotel Stage with an extraordinary evening featuring double bassist Evette Chiu and pianist Joanne Li. Focusing on contemporary masterworks from the post-1950s era, this carefully curated programme showcases a rich tapestry of styles, unveiling the unexplored possibilities of the double bass.

From a 1970s Finnish work featuring innovative playing techniques that shatter conventional perceptions of the instrument, to the delicate, modal lyricism of a Hungarian work; from the infectious, jazz-infused swing of American classical works, to a Latvian masterwork combined with emotions and hypnotic groove—each piece unveils a distinct facet of the instrument’s versatile charm.

Placing the rarely spotlighted double bass at the heart of the stage, we invite you to immerse yourself in its deep, resonant sonic world and explore the exciting boundaries of modern classical music with us.

Join us on 29 August for an evening with three beautiful and contrasting works for piano trio.

Suk’s Elegie unfolds with an intimate, searching lyricism—music of remembrance, tenderness and quiet intensity. Debussy’s Piano Trio, written in his youth, already sparkles with expressive colour, melodic charm and flashes of the distinctive sound world he would later make his own. We end with Brahms’s Piano Trio No. 2: a work of warmth and depth, moving from restless drama to expansive, songful reflection.

The experience begins with the Melon & Ham Medley, a starter platter featuring chilled melon soup and watermelon with Iberico ham that offers a refreshing, texturally diverse balance of sweet and savoury. The first course follows with Grilled Prawn, Yuzu Kosho Risotto, where briny richness meets bright, fiery citrus nuance. For the main course, Sous vide French Duck Breast, Asparagus, Peach Gastrique delivers a refined interplay of savoury and gentle acidity.
