Congratulations to David Murillo of Honduras who will be defending his PhD thesis this week at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

Felicitaciones a David Murillo, de Honduras, quien defenderá su tesis doctoral esta semana en la Universidad de Massachusetts, Department of Environmental Conservation at UMass Amherst.

David's dissertation is titled: "A multi-spatial scale evaluation of avian communities and avian control of coffee berry borer (Hypothenemus hampei) infestation in Yoro, Honduras."

The thesis defense is the culmination of many years of ground-breaking research in collaboration with the Mesoamerican Development Institute (MDI) and local coffee producers.

MDI's Director of Research & Planning, Raul Raudales, meets with the Secretariat of Natural Resources and the Environment (SERNA) in ongoing efforts to shepherd the legal establishment of the Yoro Biological Corridor that includes two watersheds vital to the nation's energy and agricultural sectors and water resources for cities and towns from the coffee regions to lower valleys. The efforts build on the late Dr. Jane Goodall’s endorsements and public support in Honduras to establish this Corredor to catalyze innovation in sustainable practices and transition to low-carbon coffee production and processing.

The Café Solar® team is eternally grateful for the support and council Dr. Jane Goodall provided to our teams implementing renewable energy in coffee processing combined with Integrated Open Canopy™ coffee cultivation. Dr. Goodall endorsed our initiative to create the Yoro Biological Corridor in Honduras, even offering to serve on the management committee in an open letter to the president of Honduras.

Dr. Goodall was always eager for reports from the ground—progress and challenges—and seemed to delight in getting to know us as individuals and hearing the stories of how we came to this work. Conversation with Dr. Goodall came easily, as she provided her own stories to provide insights, make connections, and generally buoy and renew our spirits.

Time seemed to speed up in her presence. We were struck by her level of energy, meeting well past midnight, even as she had given a sold-out presentation earlier in the evening.

While always interested in the science and studies we are engaged in, my impression is that she especially valued the human rights work in Central America that set the course for the creation of our institute. In my last visit with her in April 2024, shortly after her 90th birthday, she told me that she had come to believe more than ever, that you “have to let the magic in.” Without the magic, you will tire, and the work will seem heavy.

We will miss her council and her wonderful presence. Jane would have us start our meetings with a whisky, grateful that we are together, and another to close, until we might meet again.

The Trump Administration is hinting that they may drop the tariffs on coffee imports to the United States. The tariff is a pre-sales tax that US businesses must pay as part of the customs clearance process. This first-time tariffs on coffee from Central America are taxed at 10% of value (50% for coffee from Brazil). The tax on coffee from Honduras is approximately $15,000 to 20,000 per shipping container. These taxes come at a time when coffee prices have already nearly doubled from just a few years ago due largely to climate related issues impacting supply.

A newly formed bipartisan Congressional Coffee Caucus has been calling on the president to drop the tariffs on coffee.

United States Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said yesterday that agricultural goods including coffee and cocoa may be exempt from tariffs

The Trump administration has drafted a plan to repeal a fundamental scientific finding that gives the United States government its authority to regulate greenhouse-gas emissions and fight climate change, according to two people familiar with the plan.

The proposed Environmental Protection Agency rule rescinds a 2009 declaration known as the “endangerment finding,” which scientifically established that greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide and methane endanger human lives.

That finding is the foundation of the federal government’s only tool to limit the climate pollution from vehicles, power plants and other industries that is dangerously heating the planet.

According to new data from the University of Maryland’s GLAD lab and available on WRI’s Global Forest Watch platform, tropical primary forest disappeared at a rate of 18 football (soccer) fields per minute in 2024 — nearly double that of 2023. These are some of the most important forest ecosystems, critical for livelihoods, carbon storage, water provision, biodiversity and more. Their loss in 2024 alone caused 3.1 gigatonnes (Gt) of greenhouse gas emissions, equivalent to slightly more than the annual CO2 emissions from India’s fossil fuel use.

The Forest Pulse draws on the most recent data and analysis to reveal the latest trends in global forest loss and deforestation. This page is updated annually using annual tree cover loss data. Updates are released each year and cover the previous year’s trends.Data created and updated by Peter Po...
