GRAPE FACTS
Škrlet [pronunciation: shkr-let]
synonyms: ovnek žuti, ovnek tusti, škrlet tusti, škrtec
This rare, indigenous white grape variety is native to the Moslavina wine producing region in the Croatian Uplands, located between the gentle hills of Moslavačka gora in the north and Nature Park Lonjsko Polje in the south. The name škrlet is derived from the German word Scharlach (scarlet fever)
since the fully matured škrlet grape skins are characterised by the tiny red freckles. Known for its good resistance against botrytis due to the scattered grape cluster, this mid to late ripening variety is planted only in this part of Croatia and nowhere else in the world. TRIVIA: the most common synonynm for škrlet is ovnek (Croatian word for baby ram) because of the resemblance between škrlet grape and ram's horns
WINE FACTS
Engaging and enjoyable wine characterised by the clarity of its light yellow colour and pronounced floral aromas of medow flowers and hay. It is interwoven and complemented with hints of citrus fruits, pear and apple with a touch of spicy herbs. Light to medium bodied, with zesty, natural acidity, modestly revealing its harmonious elegance and velvety freshness in the finish. Complexity, roundness and texture is improved by ageing on lees in used oak barrels for a period of 5 months, giving the wine a more exotic aroma and flavour. Škrlet - The secret to be discovered...
