“Defending biodiversity means defending cultural diversity.”
— Carlo Petrini
When Javara first encountered the Slow Food Movement in 2010, we were still quietly finding our footing — learning to listen to the stories carried in seeds, forests, forgotten ingredients, and ancestral kitchens across Indonesia.
At a time when our journey often felt solitary, Carlo Petrini’s vision gave us reassurance that we were not alone in believing that food could become a force to protect biodiversity, cultural memory, dignity, and the future of communities.
The spirit of good, clean, and fair food deeply resonated with the path we were trying to build, helping shape the foundations of Javara, and later Seniman Pangan.
Perhaps it is no coincidence that Carlo Petrini left us only a day before the world marks International Day for Biological Diversity — as though his final departure quietly reminds us that biodiversity is not merely about nature, but also about people, culture, memory, and the wisdom carried across generations.
Thank you for showing the world that food is never simply consumption, but a profound relationship between humanity and the living earth.
Your legacy lives on in every seed preserved, every tradition remembered, and every community continuing to defend the beauty of diversity at the table.
