What does Protected Designation of Origin
(PDO) actually mean?

Achill Island Sea Salt holds PDO Status, which means that the product is directly linked to the Atlantic waters, environment and traditional production processes. It ensures that every stage of production takes place within the defined geographical area of Achill Island.

The characteristics of Achill Island Sea Salt - soft flakey texture and sweet-salty mineral taste are a direct result of the wild Atlantic waters around Achill and our slow method of sea water evaporation.

PDO protects authenticity, provenance and the story behind the product, while giving consumers confidence that what they’re buying is the real thing.

From the Atlantic waters around Achill Island, to the flakes on your plate. A taste of Achill that can’t be replicated.

One Sea, three flavours. Which Sea Salt are you reaching for?
Here is a guide to finding your favourite...

Our pure, natural sea salt flakes have a soft, flaky texture and a sweet-salty taste thanks to its naturally high mineral content. If you’re looking for one salt to use every day, this is it. It enhances whatever you’re cooking without overpowering it.

The same flaky sea salt, gently hot-smoked over beech and oak wood in our smoke house. The flavour is subtle rather than overpowering, adding depth to eggs, meat, fish and roasted vegetables, with just enough crunch to finish a dish.

Made with 75% our Achill Island Sea salt flakes and 25% Atlantic wakame, hand-harvested by the Connemara Seaweed Company. It brings a rich umami flavour that’s especially good on roast potatoes, baked fish, soups, salads, or even savoury baking.

Before our production facility in Bunacurry and before Achill Island Sea Salt found it’s way into kitchens across Ireland, there were buckets of Atlantic seawater collected from this beach, brought home and boiled with the hope of creating something that worked.

The cliffs have become a constant in our branding, a reminder of where our story started and how far we’ve come.
