The great thing about planting fruit trees after a short wait give or take a few years you start to see the returns.

Walking out to the orchard and picking fresh fruit off a tree really is the best thing on a mild damp day like today.. the little things are sometimes the best

Starting picking damsons last night to make some product for next weekends festival.

Really looking forward to this part of HedgeRow Fest.

We have such an interesting mix of artists, poets, writers, musicians and makers coming to Mount Briscoe. All taking inspiration in one way or another from our hedges and the landscape around us.

Richard Negus, author of Words from the Hedge, will be here talking hedgerows, wildlife and sharing some of his writing.

Poet Philip Brady is heading out along the hedges with Ricky Whelan for a HedgeRow & Poetry Walk.

The very talented Lynn Kirkham, artist and master basketmaker, will be weaving during the day. I could happily watch someone with her skill at work for hours!

Aileen Lambert brings us Bushes and Briars – Songs of the Hedgerow, sharing the landscape through traditional song.

We also have artist and filmmaker Michael Fortune taking us on A Walk Through the Fields and later The Company of Trees - words and live string music to finish the day.

And plenty more besides!

Love the thought of people wandering around the farm and coming across poetry, music, weaving, stories and art amongst the hedges. Seems exactly where they should be. 🌿

Most of Saturday is FREE. We would really appreciate it if you could book a ticket though, even for the free events. It just gives us an idea of numbers and helps us plan for everyone coming.

🌿 Why all the fuss about hedgerows?

We probably pass them every day without giving them much thought, but our hedgerows are quite extraordinary.

They provide food and shelter for birds, bees, butterflies, moths and so much of our wildlife. They create wonderful corridors through the countryside, allowing wildlife to move safely from one habitat to another.

They are hugely important for biodiversity, storing carbon, protecting our soils and helping to manage water. And of course, they are such a familiar and beautiful part of the Irish landscape.

Some of our hedgerows are hundreds of years old. Imagine all they have seen!

There is so much life tucked away in a hedge if you take the time to stop and look. 🌿🐝🦋

We had a lovely new apprentice visit with our regular farrier this morning. Bendigo got a new set of shoes and Jack is putting the finishing touches. He behaved like the true gent he is even though he wants to eat my phone! And Jack was a pleasure.

Review just received from our recent guests, a family of 5 from Savannah Georgia. It sounds so romantic and apparently is a lovely city. It’s always a delight to hear children giggle and play. Beautiful family who left us wishing we would meet again.

🌿 HedgeRow Fest is just over a week away! 🌿

A FREE weekend celebrating Ireland’s hedgerows through art, poetry, nature, food, music and wellbeing.

Really looking forward to welcoming everyone to Mount Briscoe for this.

Friday evening we kick things off with Wild at Mount Briscoe - a walk through the farm with writers, conservationists, artists and poets, followed by a moth ramble and supper made with organic produce from the farm.

Saturday is a full day! Bird and moth walks, morning yoga, poetry, birdsong, traditional hedgelaying, weaving, foraging, tree and hedge planting, music, meditation and lots more happening around the farm and hedgerows.

We have artists, poets, ecologists, foragers, farmers and musicians joining us over the weekend. Lots to see, hear, learn and enjoy.

Our hedgerows are such an important part of the Irish landscape. Full of life, history, food and shelter and very much worth celebrating! 🌿🦋

Supper time. Nice to see cows back on grass after so much dry weather and see twins thrive.
