To protect against bird flu, it is now mandatory for flock keepers to keep all captive birds and poultry in a secure building with no access to wild birds. Under this regulation, it will not be permitted to take part in events which involve the assembly of live birds like fairs, shows or markets in order to protect the birds from the risk of becoming infected

This requirement will come into force effective from Monday, 10th November 2025

A compulsory housing order for poultry and captive birds to protect them from the risk of avian influenza has been announced. The new rules will come into effect on Monday, 10 November 2025.

An outbreak of the highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 has occurred in a commercial turkey flock in Co. Carlow. As a consequence, restriction zones have been put in place around the holding (a 3km protection zone and 10km surveillance zone).
