Drumanilra

Drumanilra A family run organic farm beside Lough Key, supplying organic ingredients to Honestly Kitchen We achieved full Organic Status in May 2015.

We moved our young family back home to Ireland from the UK in 2012, to realise a long-held dream of reviving the 200 year old 40 acre family farm in Roscommon. The Tonra and O’Farrell families were originally tenant farmers to the Rockingham Estate on Lough Key. The farm is just outside Boyle, on the brow of a hill, with fields rolling down to the Lough Key lakeshore. The name Drumanilra – Droim a

n Iolair means “Brow of the Eagle” and is the old townland name used on older maps, presumably referring to a time when an eagle population still existed in the area. We raise rare and heritage Irish breeds outdoors, and keep stocking levels low so that animals have plenty of room to free-range. We specialise in Dexter Cattle, Jacob and Shetland Sheep and Berkshire and Tamworth Pigs. We raise organic geese and turkeys for Christmas and have a free-range, organic laying flock. We love good food and have a wish to raise our children to know and respect good food and where it comes from, to respect the animals and the environment that feed us, to take seriously our responsibility as keepers of that environment, and above all to know when something tastes good! In the Summer of 2014, we took our "Shepherd's Hut" style catering trailer to shows and festivals around Ireland. The Shepherd's Hut later became the Drumanilra Farm Kitchen and took up residence on Elphin St. in Boyle, next to Supervalu. Our Boyle cafe is currently closed. However, we have opened a new farm shop and restaurant in Carrick-on-Shannon and Strandhill - named Honestly Farm Kitchens. Here we serve organic beef and lamb from our farm, as well as a host of other treats. We also run an artisan bakery, Carraig Rua.

Our Kickstart Your Polytunnel Growing Year course begins tomorrow, and there are a last few places remaining.

Get your polytunnel set up for a strong growing season with our two-part practical course on 15 and 22 April.

Across two hands-on morning sessions, you’ll learn how to plan your growing year, choose the right crops and varieties, improve your nursery skills, and manage everything from sowing and bed prep to watering, pests and summer growing. Although the course is taught in the context of a no-dig garden, the skills are transferable to any organic indoor growing system.

Each session runs from 10.30am to 1.30pm and finishes with tea, coffee, an informal Q&A, and time to chat with fellow growers. The course is in two parts across the two days so you will need to attend both.

Spring’s properly on the horizon now, which means one thing for us… it’s nearly go-time for another growing season in the polytunnels. 🌱

Head gardener Odhrán has drafted in some assistants this week, with Emily and Malachi in helping hands mode, getting stuck into bed prep and a good old tidy-up.

And if you’re planning to grow loads this year, don’t forget our workshops are coming up:

March 2026: An Introduction to No Dig Gardening Workshops
April 2026: Kickstart Your Polytunnel Growing Year

How about this for an unusual Christmas present for the keen gardener in your life?🪴🌱🥕

We’re running two hands-on growing workshops at Drumanilra Farm, taught by our organic grower and permaculture specialist, Odhran Crowe.

An Introduction to No-Dig Gardening is a beginner-friendly morning on our home farm where you’ll learn how we grow veg for Honestly. From turning grass into beds to seed starting, w**d management and crop care, it’s a practical, relaxed session.

Kickstart Your Polytunnel Growing Year is held over two mornings, covering layouts, sowing plans, nursery skills, propagation, composting, watering, pests and everything you need for a productive season.

A whole slope of spruce has been cleared and you can feel the ecosystem shift immediately. Fast crops or not, they reshape everything around them.

Do you think Ireland should push harder for native woodland instead?

Our new batch of hens are ready for good homes. They’re 25 weeks old and have just started laying, so you’ll get eggs straight away.

They’re a calm, steady breed and settle in quickly. If you’re interested, send us a message and we’ll talk you through everything you need to know. 🥚🐓
