This is an extremely curated collection of pics from our walk in Derrycassin woods in Co Longford today.
Nestled amongst the oak and beech trees were Elders with flowers about to burst into bloom, blackberry bushes, honey suckles, stunning fox gloves and a couple of plants we didn’t recognise.
Unfortunately the flip side of that coin was not a pretty sight. Storm Eowyn did a lot of damage to many trees but far worse was the utter devastation caused by Coillte’s destructive extraction processes.
There was a picnic bench sitting in what literally looked like a bomb site.
The saddest part though was the havoc of a giant tangle of trees cut and littering the top of a ring fort. A sacred place desecrated.
Despite all the horror there was so much beauty - the wonderful arch of carefully chiselled hand made bricks at the entrance of the long forgotten walled garden, stone bridges over lazy streams and so much beautiful birdsong.
I suppose it’s a metaphor for life: look for the good and you’ll find it!
