Did you know that children who spend time outdoors, around animals, soil, and nature are exposed to a wide variety of harmless microbes that can help support the development of a healthy immune system?

At Mac Aodhagain Farmstead, we believe childhood should include muddy boots, dirty hands, wet clothes, and plenty of fresh air.

Today's video is of Erin doing what she does best—jumping into puddles, getting covered in mud, and having the time of her life. While it might mean extra washing for us, these are the moments that build confidence, resilience, a love of nature, and memories that will last a lifetime.
Sometimes the best childhood lessons aren't taught indoors. They're found in muddy puddles on a farm.

We’re delighted to be collaborating with Joe Price and Ross Ell Wham on an NCFE Level 3 accredited course. I will be delivering the wild game butchery section, sharing practical skills, ethical field-to-table preparation, and knowledge built through hands-on experience.

Really looking forward to being part of this and helping keep these traditional skills alive 👌🦌

Watering might look simple—but it’s one of the most important jobs on the farm. 💧 Getting water right means stronger roots, healthier plants, and better harvests down the line.
But today wasn’t just about watering beds… it was about passing on the habit. 🌱

Two generations side by side—Dad and Erin keeping things growing at Mac Aodhagain Farmstead.
These are the small moments that build a lifelong connection to the land, and there’s no better classroom than the garden itself.

Rain or shine, the work continues… and so does the learning.

It’s happening at Mac Aodhagain Farmstead… 🐣🥚

One by one they’re starting to crack and make their way out — some quicker than others, but all doing it in their own time. Hard to beat this stage, you could watch it all day.

A few new arrivals already here and plenty more on the way 👀

Rhubarb is one of those crops that goes from “nothing yet” to “we’re drowning in it” very quickly this time of year 🌱

Well… we’ve officially hit that stage 😅
We’ve more rhubarb than we know what to do with, and rather than see it go to waste, we’re offering it out.

If anyone would like a load of fresh rhubarb stalks, send us a message 👍

Perfect for crumbles, jams, or whatever you fancy baking up!

This weekend has been a challenge for sure. Moving the 27tonnes of recently delivered mushroom compost in this weekend 🚜💨

You can see the heat still coming off it as it continues to break down.

Covered up now and we’ll let it sit and do its thing before it’s ready for the beds 🌱
It’ll be worth the wait—this stuff will feed the soil right through the season 🙌
Anyone else working with mushroom compost this year? 👇

The first signs of the season are finally here 🌱
Our asparagus is just starting to push up through the soil at Mac Aodhagain Farmstead—small, but a sure sign that spring is well and truly underway.

After the long winter, there’s nothing better than seeing new life breaking through.

Not long now until they’re ready for the plate… fresh, homegrown, and well worth the wait.

What’s popping up in your garden at the minute? 👇

The girls are settling into their new home nicely 🐖🌾

Plenty of fresh straw, a cosy shelter, and already making themselves well at home (as you can see 😄).
Nothing better than seeing them content, warm, and rooting around like they own the place.

It doesn’t take long for pigs to turn a house into a proper home ❤️

Two new arrivals on the farm this week 🐖🌾

Meet our latest piglets settling in nicely at Mac Aodhagain Farmstead.

Like everything we do here, they each have their own role to play.

One will be raised on pasture to eventually feed the family — the honest, sometimes hard side of homesteading. The other will stay on to become part of our breeding line and help grow the farm into the future.

It’s not always the easy side of farming that gets shown, but it’s the real one — built on respect for the animals, good care, and making the most of what we raise.

For now, they’re just two curious little piglets enjoying the fresh air, good grass, and plenty of attention from Erin.

It’s been a tough few days here at Mac Aodhagain Farmstead.

Our only cat, Shadow, was hit by a car and badly broke his leg. It gave us all a serious scare, but thankfully he got the help he needed in time.

After a late-night dash, Flynn & O’Connell vets saw him straight away, and he later had surgery with the team at MyVet in Lucan.

We’re very relieved to say he’s now back home, resting up and on the road to recovery 🐾

A huge thank you to both teams for the care, kindness, and quick action — it made all the difference.

Safe to say Shadow will be keeping things a bit quieter for a while.
