The French Market

The French Market We are an Irish business supplying wines & speciality foods, check out our website!

The French Market was established in 2004 by Pascal & Siobhan Bonnichon to import and distribute a wide range of quality and affordable French wines throughout Ireland. Pascal grew up near Sancerre close to many of the long established vineyards and he spent his early years learning all about the vines and complexities of wine production. Having worked with Carrefour, one the major hypermarkets in

France for 15 years, he decided to move to Ireland and utilise the extensive knowledge he acquired in wine and wine distribution to establish The French Market. Since then, The French Market has enjoyed continued growth each year, with new customers being attracted to their wide range of French, Spanish, Italian and New World Wines constantly updated and added to by Pascal. The quality of the products and a close relationship with their clientele is of utmost importance to The French Market. Since they set up their business, their philosophy hasn’t changed ….. ‘Delicious French (and New World) wines at the right price’

Back in 1987, Pascal arrived in Sligo as part of one of the very first Erasmus groups to come to Ireland. He met Siobhan — and the rest, as they say, is history. 💛

Fast forward almost 40 years, and their story is now part of Common Ground: Ireland and the EU, a new exhibition at EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum in Dublin, exploring how Ireland's EU membership has shaped lives, careers and families. Their two adult children are among the more than a million babies thought to have been born to couples who met through the Erasmus programme — and we're pretty proud to say The French Market is the business that came out of it all!

It's a nice reminder that some of the best things — a marriage, a family, a business — start with something as simple as a student exchange programme and a bit of curiosity about another country.

📍 Common Ground: Ireland and the EU is open now at EPIC Museum, Dublin, until the end of 2026.

A massive thank you to Luisa and Maria Vieira de Sousa Wines for welcoming Franck, our Galway rep, in the Douro Valley Wine Region. These passionate sisters work on the long established family vineyard of nearly 60 hectares along the steep Douro river. Port producers for generations, their savoir faire is great and the tawny ports from 10 to 60 years of age are phenomenally beautiful. The Alice white Douro wine is lovely and fresh, perfect in the heat of Portugal while the Alice red and Vieira de Sousa Reserva have power and finesse and these characteristic flavours of violet and spice from Portuguese grapes which are so typical of the Douro.
We stock both wines and a big selection of the Port and can’t wait to get you to taste them…

We sell all kinds of wine but we got a special kick this week when receiving a box of one of the most prestigious and sought after wine from Bordeaux, . Hand delivered with great care!
The « Rolex » or « supercar » of the wine world, it is an ultra-expensive, highly exclusive red wine from Pomerol in the Bordeaux region of France.
In 2004, Pétrus produced approximately 36,000 bottles from their 11.5-hectare (28 acres) vineyard in Pomerol. That may seem like quite a few bottles, but of course they still have to be divided among wine lovers all over the world...

The 2004 Petrus is surprisingly broad, dense, and opulent. It possesses a deep ruby/purple colour, terrific purity, and notes of mulberries, sweet cherries, black fruits, scorched earth, Chinese black tea, and a hint of truffles. With full body, moderately high tannin, and impressive depth and length, it is at its apogee now and should stay there for many years.
