Eating is something most people do without a second thought. It’s part of everyday life, something that should feel simple, safe and shared.
But for millions of people living with food allergies, it is rarely that straightforward. Every ingredient matters. Every label matters. Every bite comes with a question they cannot afford to get wrong: is this safe for me?
“May contain” might sound like a small detail, something easy to overlook or dismiss. But for someone with a food allergy, those two words can carry real uncertainty. They can mean weighing up risk, second guessing information, or choosing to go without altogether.
When those labels are overused, inconsistent or unclear, that uncertainty only grows. What should be a helpful warning can start to feel unreliable, leaving people to make decisions without the confidence they deserve.
No one should have to gamble with their health just to eat.
We’ve made important progress through Natasha's Law, helping improve ingredient transparency on prepacked foods for direct sale. But for many people, especially when it comes to “may contain” labelling, there is still more to be done.
Clear, accurate and consistent information is not just helpful, it is essential. It gives people the ability to make informed choices, reduces risk, and allows them to eat with confidence, not fear.
A small shift in understanding, across food businesses, systems and society, can make a life-changing difference.
