When should you scan your cows for pregnancy diagnosis? 🐄
Most farmers scan once. But when you scan - and whether you scan again - determines how much value you actually get from it. Here are the two scanning windows every dairy and beef farmer should know.

1️⃣ FIRST SCAN: FROM 28 DAYS AFTER AI
The earliest reliable window for pregnancy diagnosis. Days 28-32 after AI is the recommended time for accurate ultrasound detection.
What you learn:

5-20% of confirmed pregnancies are lost in the first 60 days. A meta-analysis of 19,723 records found average losses of 13% between days 30-45 and 7% between days 45-60. Without a recheck, those losses go completely undetected.
What the recheck reveals:

Every empty day costs €3.81 per cow (Teagasc). A cow missed for 60 days costs €229 in delayed conception alone - plus feed, housing, and €1,800 per replacement heifer if culled.
Ultrasound also reveals what milk testing never will: uterine health, ovarian structures, reproductive disorders, and embryo or foetal death. Catching these early means acting before they drain your herd's performance.
