Happy International Coffee Day! Just in case you needed an excuse to brew yourself another cup of your favourite FiXX.
In 2014, members of the International Coffee Organisation agreed to observe a common International Coffee Day every October 1st. In 2026, the United Nations General Assembly designated the same date in Resolution 80/248. The decision recognises coffee not only as a beverage, but also as part of a global value chain that connects farmers, cooperatives, researchers, traders, roasters, baristas, businesses and consumers.
The observance aims to raise awareness of coffee's economic, social, cultural, and environmental importance and encourage collective action toward a fairer, more resilient, and sustainable coffee sector. Whether you grow it, brew it, serve it or simply love it — let's celebrate coffee and raise our cups to the millions of people whose livelihoods depend on it.

1. Part 2 of our photos showing the journey from origin to cup, following green coffee from the roastery to coffee cup.

2. Coffee Cupping: From green beans to roasted samples, coffee cupping (tasting/testing) helps evaluate coffee’s flavour, aroma and quality.

3. Roast Profile: A roast profile shapes coffee’s flavour, aroma, body and acidity. Tracking each roast helps us deliver consistent flavour and quality, batch after batch.

4. Roasting Equipment: Coffee is commonly roasted using either a drum or hot air /fluid bed roaster (image). Roasting requires skill. The timing and speed of each roasting stage influences the final flavour.

5. Coffee Roasting: A typical roast takes 10–16 minutes, followed by rapid cooling to avoid over-roasting. Broad roast overview… Dark: Bold & intense. / Light: Clean & fruity. / Medium: Balance of both.

6. Coffee Packing: Specialised equipment packs/seals coffee consistently. Great coffee needs protection. Freshly roasted coffee releases carbon dioxide, a one-way valve lets this gas escape while keeping oxygen out. Our recycled bags protect coffee’s freshness, flavour and aroma.

7. Coffee Grinding: Grind size refers to the coarseness or fineness of ground coffee. Grinding transforms roasted beans into the right size (fine, medium or coarse) for brewing. Which grind size depends on your brewing method and plays a key role in the final flavour of your coffee.

8. Pouring Espresso: A fine grind creates the flow and extraction espresso needs. A typical espresso takes 25–30 seconds to brew, with a steady, syrupy flow. Suggested time is a starting point, not a rule. The goal is to balance sweetness and acidity through taste.

9. Latte Art: More than a pretty pattern. Skilled pouring, textured milk and great espresso brought together through technique and practice. The work of a trained barista.

10. Brewing at Home: There are many ways to brew your coffee. A simple starting point is 60g of coffee per 1 litre of water. Brewing 500ml in a French Press? Use 30g of coffee. – Enjoy !

1. Photos from our trips to origin sharing how coffee gets from coffee farm to roaster.

2. Origin: Coffee grows between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn. Known as the Coffee Belt.

3. Coffee is a fruit: Coffee cherries take from 6–9 months to ripen on the coffee tree. Different varieties, different speeds.

4. Harvest: Ripe Cherries are picked by hand or machine, depending on the farm.

5. Coffee beans: Inside every coffee cherry are two seeds. These become the coffee beans.

6. Processing: Before coffee is dried, the fruit/seeds need to be processed; the two main methods are...

Natural: The cherry dries around the seed, bringing fruity, sweet and full-bodied flavours.

Washed: The fruit is removed first, creating cleaner, brighter flavours.

7. Drying: Coffee beans can take up to 30 days to dry. Typically, beans are dried on patios or raised beds, depending on the method and location. Both natural and washed methods prepare the coffee for the dry mill.

8. Sorting: The dry mill is where the beans are sorted and defects eliminated. Beans are graded by size, density and colour to help ensure even roasting and consistent quality. This stage also determines the coffee’s market value.

9. Shipping: Green coffee beans are packed using jute bags or similar to protect them on route to roasters worldwide.
