WEEKLY FARM & VEG BOX UPDATE

On The Farm 🌾

The headline of the week has got to be the weather, the heat, that is growing by the day, has the farm crew in the glasshouses and tunnels early each morning with 5AM starts being the norm. In the fields, our crops, having received a few days of rain are now basking in the summer heat and growing nicely so everything is finally right with our world 👨‍🌾

With mid summers day now firmly behind us, we are focusing our attention on ensuring we will have lots of crops to fill our boxes through autumn and winter. The propagation tunnels are again filling up the benching heaving with seedlings ready to replace the early summer crops as they finish.

New This Week.

Sweet heart York Cabbage: This is the first of the outdoor sweetheart york and it is fabulous. Even for those who do not like caggage we are suggesting giving this a go. Try chopping it fine and steaming it for 3-5 minutes to bring out its flavour. Adding a generous bring of fresh black pepper and a k**b of butter finishes it off. Alternatives, cut it into wedges, coat in parmesan before roasting (Full recipe for this easy but amazing dish will be on our page.

Fresh Garden Peas: Ok, so we didn't grow a lot of these because we wanted to see how you guys responded to them. For us, shelling peas with our children is an annual tradition and a touchstone to times and skills of an earlier and more innocent age. But fair warning, we have discovered that very few of the these sweet garden peas make it to the pot as they are so delicious raw 😋 We have added peas to our add-on section and if they prove popular we will grow them in larger quantities next year, so please. Do let us know what you think.

Bare Acre Garlic: We have finally managed to clean and dry our large garlic bulbs and are happy to report that the harvest was good. It is now added for you as an add-on and will feature until stocks run out, but we expect to have enough until Christmas and beyond.

Some Crops Finishing.

Our massive lemons are now finished, but will be replaced by XL lemons from our Spanish friends, they are marginally smaller and so a little cheaper but are still fabulous.

Clementines have been removed from our add-ons as our Spanish grower is out and the clementines available on the market are mainly southern hemisphere and not as juicy as we would like. We are now awaiting the first of the fabulous Nadorcott (Afourer) Clemintines and once they appear, we will add them back to our lists.

Olive Oil: Our Olive Oil supplier is currently unable to supply us, so the product has been removed from our list. We are hoping that we will have it back in stock soon.

HATE CABBAGE? THIS WILL CHANGE YOUR MIND
ROAST YORK CABBAGE WITH PARMESAN

Ingredients

1 head of York cabbage (sweetheart/pointed cabbage), washed

3-4 tbsp Extra-virgin olive oil

1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese (Parmigiano-Reggiano)

1 tsp Italian seasoning blend (Or Oregano & Thyme)

1/2 tsp garlic powder

1/4 tsp Onion Powder (We only use the Garlic Granules)

Sea Salt and freshly ground black pepper (to taste)
______________________
Instructions

Preheat your oven to 200°C. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Depending on size, slice the into quarters or into eights, but make sure to keep the core intact so to hold the wedges together.

In a small bowl, whisk together the olive oil, seasoning, garlic powder, onion powder, a pinch of salt, and a few grinds of black pepper. Then brush the mix generously over all sides of the cabbage wedges.

Arrange the cabbage wedges in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet. Roast in the preheated oven for 20 minutes.

Carefully remove the baking sheet from the oven and flip the cabbage wedges. Sprinkle the grated Parmesan cheese evenly over the tops of each wedge.

Return the sheet to the oven and roast for another 10–15 minutes until the cabbage is tender and the cheese is golden brown and crispy.

SIMPLE & DELICIOUS.

Happy Solstice.

The summer solstice is a vital threshold for vegetable growers and gardeners as it marks the longest day and the zenith of sunlight energy. It also serves as a biological clock for plants, dictating growth cycles, triggering the move from leafy growth to fruiting, and it acts as a timely reminder to growers that its time to look towards and plan for autumn crops.
