Chianti is one of those w**es that almost seems to demand food alongside it. Sangiovese brings that brilliant combination of ripe cherry, freshness, a little savoury spice and just enough grip to make you start thinking about tomato-rich pasta, grilled meat, good olive oil and plenty of Parmesan.

We’ve three particularly good bottles on the shelves at Donnybrook Fair.

There’s Pèppoli Chianti Classico – €24.99, from the Antinori family, with plenty of bright red fruit and a beautifully fresh, polished style. Il Palagio Chianti – €24.99 is juicy, generous and very easy to imagine beside a big bowl of pasta, while Bibbiano Chianti Classico – €27.99 brings a little more savoury depth and structure to the table.

If you’re cooking tonight, we’d keep it simple: ragù, lasagne, pizza, roast pork, grilled steak or a wedge of mature Pecorino. Chianti tends to take care of the rest.

All three are available in store now – a very good little snapshot of why we love Italian w**e so much at Donnybrook Fair.
