Pat Clarke trading as Clarke’s Fresh Fruit, has established a reputation for the production of quality fresh Irish fruit over the past 60 years. The flavoursome berries are grown, picked, packed and dispatched on the family farm daily. Situated in East Meath near the village of Stamullen (M1, Exit 7), Clarke’s is a family run business growing strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries and blueber
ries over 75 acres. It all began in 1960 when Pat planted ten drills of strawberries on the family farm. This plot quickly expanded to an acre and in 1965 he commenced selling strawberries commercially on the Dublin market where it was auctioned. In the early years all fruit was planted in the ground so weather conditions were a major challenge. In the 70s cloches (each row was covered individually with polythene) were introduced to extend the growing season
In 1983 Pat introduced the El Santa Strawberry variety to Ireland. Today the El Santa variety is used for 80% of all strawberry production in the country. It is known for its excellent flavour, firm texture and quality shelf life. With the introduction of Polythene tunnels came a major breakthrough, fruit and workers were now protected from the elements. They also extended the season from April to November. The latest design is known as “Cosy Tunnels”, the thermic polythene creates more heat to ripen the berries. Today the fruit is grown on table tops, with computerised drip feed irrigation. Certified plants and organic compost are used. Biological pest control and natural pollination are used as part of an Integrated Pest Management programme to enhance successful growth. Acquiring expertise and knowledge through ongoing assessment of global developments and current trends, ensures that high standards are maintained. Strict quality control is implemented and sustained by a highly trained and experienced work-force of up to 180 people. The strawberries are stem-picked, this is a unique method which ensures minimal handling. It is picked, packed and dispatched to retailers on the same day to guarantee freshness. The fruit production season continues from early May to the end of November. A range of jams has added value to the produce which is available all year round and made from our 100% Irish Fruit grown on the Family Farm.
