2023 Wrap up from Fat Walrus will be quite simple. This year I took a tough, but right decision to close the business down. After struggling with sales and soaring costs for running the business (ingredients, labour, packaging, energy bills - everything, really) in 2022, it became bitterly apparent to me that Fat Walrus needs to take a break and I need to get a "real" job to make ends meet. Personally, this was a hard call to make - I've invested a lot of time and money and soul into this chubby pinniped venture and it broke my heart when it did now work out.

It was good while it lasted, though! I had a chance to create and brew some amazing beers, unleash my love for walruses with quirky label designs, participate in a few beer events, talk about beer and yeast on a beer podcast, proudly wear a full-body walrus costume during beer tastings, get some pretty awesome reviews on Untappd (3.93 for Amuse the Muse!) and meet so many awesome people in the process!

None of this would have happened without you ladies and gents - our followers, buyers and customers. Thanks for your continuous support, for placing that order for a case (or two or three) for your store, and ultimately for grabbing that can (or two or three) off the shelf.

Walruses. They were part of our lives way before brewing. This was 10 years ago: an engagement ring is presented and worn by a walrus, of course.

It is truly amazing to see our chubby walruses travelling far and wide! This time showing up in Vilnius, Lithuania right next to Gediminas' tower.

Vilnius holds a special place in my heart and it is so good to see walrus beers in the city :)

Throwback Thursday times!
This is me measuring hops addition at in Auckland in 2016. I was kindly admitted to a brew bar on a brew day (well, 6:30am) to watch the magic happen.
My very early brewing days, just getting to know the basics and being accepted in the community! Good vibes!

So, the stout. Fat Walrus stout. Creamy, rich, dark and delicious. The one that was promised a while ago, yet also the one not to be hitting the shelves. Not this year, at least.

I was a bit too late for the "stout season" by the time this brew was ready and tasted the way I wanted it to taste. General advice is that you need to have your stout available mid October, so off licence people can stock up on time, so that everyone else can get their hands on it too.

In brewing, as in many other areas of life, timing is a pretty important thing.

Very happy with how it turned. And you'll have to see for yourself in 2023.

There's a latte art competition happening at right now, where and myself are pouring delicious beers to spectators and participants. Except that I'm not there because of this lady.

Someone's got her first heat and been making so much noise every time when left alone, that our neighbours complained. And rightly so.
So instead of pouring some Amuse the Muse and PeachFork to all the amazing peeps attending the Latte Art Throwdown, I am writing this post. It feels like a massive networking and marketing opportunity just slipped away, but oh well.
There's a good dog, who's feeling pretty miserable and could do with some belly rubs.

With beer deliveries done, I was kindly shown around the space by Cathal ! Was very excited to meet him in person - Cathal's story is not unlike mine.
We both used to live in New...York? Orleans? Hampshire? 🤷🏻‍♂️
Or shall we leave all the good bits and beers to the upcoming Meet the Brewers event?
is telling me there are still a few tickets left, but that ain't gonna last 😉
