Molloys Fish is now in Mountbellew and Athlone! 🐟

We’ve recently taken over a fish stall from a loyal customer of ours, and we’re delighted to be taking on the business.

We’ve supplied independent fish vans and market traders around the country for a long time, but this is our first time running markets of our own.

📍 The Square, Mountbellew
Every Wednesday, 8am to 5.30pm

📍 St. Mary’s Square, Athlone
Every Thursday, 8.30am to 5pm

We’ll also be in Athlone on Fridays for the next two weeks, from 8.30am to 3pm, before moving to Thursdays only.

An exciting step for our family business, and we’re looking forward to getting established in both towns and bringing our fish there for years to come. 🐟🐟

A different setting for talking fish today 🐟

Really enjoyed going back to St Catherine’s Vocational School (18 years later 😆) and spending the morning with the Transition Year students as part of BIM’s Seafood Academy workshop. A chance to show them some of the fish we work with, how we prepare them and the work involved before a fillet reaches the plate.

Lovely to get out of the factory and share a bit of what we do. Thanks to BIM, the teachers and the students for having me! 🐟🐟

The fish doesn’t know it’s Fish Friday 🎣

I love working with fish, but one of the hardest parts of what I do is the expectation that everything should be available all of the time.

Wild fish just doesn’t work like that.

What’s available changes with the seasons, weather, quotas, fishing effort and simply what the boats catch.

Every week we have to take a gamble. Buy too little and we disappoint someone. Buy too much and we risk wasting an incredibly valuable wild food.

My two busiest weeks are Christmas and Holy Week. Ironically, last year they were also the two weeks we had the least fish available.

So whether you’re buying for your family or writing a restaurant menu, maybe the best question isn’t “Why don’t you have what I want?”

It’s “What’s available today?”

Because you can’t manufacture availability in the sea. 🌊

Our old friend Stephane called in while he was in Killybegs collecting a tuna caught by a boat fishing for sprat.

Always good to get a few minutes to talk fish and catch up with someone who knows the industry. We sent him back to Galway with some of our line caught squid for his weekend markets too 🦑🐟
