Successful Day at Ulster for Innyvale's U9-13s

Well done to everyone who took part in the Ulster Children's Games and U12/13 Track & Field Championships in Stranolar, Co. Donegal on Sunday 31st May and a huge thank you to all the parents and family members who travelled today.

In the Under 9 to 11 age groups, the competition is both an individual and a team event, with the top two athletes from each club in an event having their results combined to determine who advances to the All-Irelands in June. Top three pairs at this age as well as top four individuals at U12 and 13 age groups all qualify for nationals.

In the U9 girls, Katelyn Denneny and Molly O’Hare both made it on to the podium in their first Ulster event, the duo taking second and third places in the turbojavelin event, with Katelyn throwing a new personal best of 8.98m to take the silver medal and Molly just behind on 8.25m to earn the bronze medal. The pair were the second placed club team and therefore qualify for nationals in three weeks time.

In the U10s, Layla Denneny was an impressive sixth in the turbojavelin with a new personal best record of 9.89m, while in the boys event, Sean Lynch enjoyed better weather when he threw the turbojavelin out to 16.05m to take fifth place. Both were the highest placed Cavan athletes in their events.

The U11 turbojavelin once again saw two Innyvale girls heading to the podium, with second place going to Saoirse Tully who set a huge new PB of 14.19m. Maisie O’Hare also showed strong improvement to reach 13.87m in difficult conditions and earn herself a bronze medal. Maisie and Saoirse were the second placed team on the day to secure a place for themselves in the national finals.

In the 60m sprint, Jessica Hannan claimed second place overall with a strong performance, winning her heat in a time of 9.62seconds. Robyn Everett was fourth in her heat and 14th overall, her time of 10.18s helping her and Jessica to second placed team and a place in the All-Irelands. Saoirse Tully won her heat in a time of 10.37s, with Robyn McCabe in 3rd place in her heat, the girls being placed as 19th and 24th out of over 40 athletes in this packed event.

The strong results in the sprint boded well for the relay later in the day and this proved true as the team of the two Robyn’s, Saoirse, Jessica and sub Maisie were the winners of the 4x100m event, over a second clear of second the place team.

In the U12s events, the strong wind proved to be quite a challenge in he turbojavelin, where Navah O’Donohue and Ella Denneny both finished in the top 15. Ella Threw 7.08m and Navah 9.35m. Navah was also 14th in the shot putt, reaching 3.78m. On the track, Oisin Tully lead his heat of the 600m from the whole way without being challenged, clocking a time of 1min48.78. Unfortunately for Oisin the event is effectively a time trial, with the other heat featuring two strong athletes who battled each other the whole way to the line and pipped Oisin by just half a second, relegating him to third place, but an Ulster medal all the same.

And in the U13 events, Evie Callery-Tracey was 15th in the long jump, while in the 80m sprint, she finished in third place in her heat, with her time of 12.5 seconds putting her 11th out of 34 athletes and top of the Cavan athletes. Katie Hannan qualified for the All-Irelands in the shot putt thanks to a new PB of 8.44m which earned her an Ulster silver medal. Katie also took part in the though 600m race, where she improved her PB by a huge margin of over seven seconds to finish fourth in her heat and twelfth overall in a time of 1min58.81. Jackson Everett finished fifth in the javelin, throwing 18.39m and was the winner of the shot putt, sending the 2kg weight out to 9.20m

Well done to one and all on their performances today, whether it was a new PB, a medal, or another challenge you set yourself. Best of luck to all who are going forward to nationals over the coming weeks, as well as those yet to do their Ulster events. Thank you to all the parents who travelled to Donegal for the event, supporting their own as well as the other children and thank you also to the coaches and the athletes for their hard work over the year.

Well done to our four athletes who took part in the All-Ireland Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday 28th March in Athlone.
First up on the day was Kaitlin Shaw in the Under 15 shot putt. Having qualified as a silver medallist at Ulster, she finished ahead of all the other Ulster qualifiers. Kaitlin's best throw of 9.58m put her in eighth place overall. In the U13 shot putt, Ulster champion Jackson Everett maintained his top Ulster spot with a best throw of 9.79m, leaving him in eighth place as well.
In the U13 girls 60m hurdles, Aoibhinn Farrelly was sixth in her heat in a new personal best time of 11.86 seconds, finishing ahead of one of the Ulster medallists that beat her at provincial level. And in the U14 girls, Íosa Lynch was fifth in her heat of the 60m hurdles. She was unlucky to hit a hurdle awkwardly and lost momentum, but still managed to finish the race in a time of 11.62 seconds, also beating one of the Ulster medal winners from the previous competition.
Well done to all for qualifying for nationals in the first place and for continuing to show improvements in their performances as we look forward to the outdoor season.
