What a week at Yellow Belly Farm 🌱

The plant sale was everything, buzzing, joyful, and a real reminder of why we do this. A huge thank you to our incredible growing team James and Mags, with a special mention to Mags who grew every single one of those healthy, strong organic plants from seed, an absolute trojan effort. Thank you to our brilliant teenage helpers Hannah, Lily and Robyn, and to Elena for keeping everything running smoothly and everyone fed and watered on the day. Couldn’t do any of this without you all.

Speaking of Elena, she’ll be hosting yoga and pilates classes starting next Saturday! Head to yellowbellyfarm.com to book your spot 🧘‍♀️

Now we’re turning our attention to the market garden and a season that’s already full of promise. The tunnel is filling up with tomatoes, cucumbers, chillis, aubergine, and plenty of basil keeping them all company. Out in the garden we’re sowing, transplanting, managing the watering through this hot spell, and staying on top of the weeds. There’s never a dull moment, but honestly we wouldn’t have it any other way.

This season we’ll be harvesting straight into the veg boxes and down to our friends at Cush and Grumpy Bakers. Two box sizes available weekly:

🥦 Belly Box, 6-8 items, serves 2-3 people, €22
🥬 Big Belly Box, 6-8 items, serves 4+ people, €28

Boxes can be collected from the farm, from Cush and Grumpy Bakers in Midleton town, or we can arrange local delivery. We’re expecting to open orders online mid June so keep an eye out!

All grown here on the farm, with love, attention and a healthy dose of enthusiasm.

Here’s to an abundant season from the land 🌿 Follow along and support the farm where you can, it means the world to us.

Overhead irrigation is alive in the tunnel. One header pipe down the centre, five sprinklers spaced two meters apart, full coverage across all five beds. It’s beautiful. A little piece of nature brought back inside.

The timing isn’t accidental. The nursery is getting close to capacity for the market garden, so we’ve moved all the plant sale stock onto benches in the main tunnel. These plants need daily water to be in top shape for May 16th, and this is a clean automated solution.

We’re now running three irrigation methods in the tunnel: drip lines on each bed, a water butt with auto-refill for hand watering, and now overhead. The tomatoes and cucumbers won’t be too interested in a shower once the heat arrives, but until then, everything else is going to love it.

All controlled through the Hunter system, solenoids in the valve box, wired back to the controller. Trigger it from my phone, set a schedule, job done. One less thing to be running out to the tunnel for every day.

A Rainy April Thursday in the tunnel, perfect sowing weather. Basil, turnips, beans, spring onions and salad. While it’s lashing outside, we’re getting a head start in here.
One thing I always do that makes a real difference: vermiculite.

Coarse grade goes on top of the tomatoes after potting up, a thin layer that holds in moisture, nutrients and heat, especially when they’re not on automatic watering yet. Low effort, big impact.

Fine grade goes over every seed tray after sowing. Acts like a light blanket, lets the seedlings push through easily while still giving them that same protective layer.

You can pick it up in most garden centres or online at Fruit Hill Farm.

It’s the small things that add up. Give your plants the best possible start and they’ll pay you back come harvest time, same as anything worth doing really.
