Summer is well and truly here and there’s barely a moment to stand still on the farm. The cattle are working through some of our best summer grass and the pigs are living their best lives out in the paddocks.

Our butcher’s shop is open 9am-1pm both Friday and Saturday and if you’re planning a BBQ this weekend, we’ve got you covered. Thick artisan sausages, handmade burgers, bone-in chops and steaks, all from organic, grass-fed and free-range animals.

Orders also go out nationwide each week - head to lunasafarm.ie to learn more or follow us on Instagram

Summer is in full swing and the farm is absolutely buzzing. The cattle are out on lush pasture, the pigs are rooting around in the sunshine, and we’re flat out in the butchery keeping up with it all.

We’re open 9am-1pm this Friday and Saturday in the shop. Come and see what’s in the counter. Plenty of beautiful grass-fed and finished beef and free-range pork, plus all the bits worth cooking quickly (or low and slow) on a warm evening.

You’ll also find us on Instagram or at lunasafarm.ie

The month of May. Snippets from the farm, our shop, and moments in between. 🌞🌿

In no particular order… The garden is beginning to flourish, new season potatoes soon to be harvested, cattle are enjoying summer pastures, and visited our farm and butchery, mycelium threads in last years IMO4 compost pile (indigenous microorganisms - part of Korean natural farming), farming and working with kids, Dolores enjoying certified organic Irish grown grains, our resident c**k pheasant, super duper gelatinous bone broth and meals made with our organic meats, charcuterie board in the making, preparing to ship orders in our insulated boxes, coffee breaks at the butchery finally spent outside now that summer is here, and a rare day off at the beach on what happened to be the hottest on record for May.

New life going into the ground at Lúnasa Farm 🌱

We recently stitched a certified organic multi-species sward directly into our existing pasture (see what seed mixes we used in our previous post). No spraying off, no ploughing, no bare soil left exposed to wind and rain.

This method keeps the soil web intact. The existing root mass stays in the ground, holding carbon, feeding fungi, preventing erosion. We’re adding to what’s already there, not starting from scratch.

The sward isn’t your standard ryegrass monoculture. We selected a blend of grasses, legumes, herbs and flowers (plantain, chicory, vetch, clover, yarrow to name a few). Plants that pull up minerals from deep in the soil profile, optimising the health of our cattle, and attracting pollinators across the whole growing season.

Diverse pasture. Healthier animals. Better beef. It all starts with the soil! 🪱🍄🌿🌼🥩

A huge thank you to for helping us achieve this.

A couple of weeks ago we stitched a multi species sward into one of our fields. Swipe across to see the mixes that we purchased from 🌿 We also added vetch and forage chicory. We did the same in our meadow three years ago and it’s now bursting with diversity (the last image is the meadow last summer). It was humming with insects and full of butterflies!

Why sow a multi-species sward?
🌿 Improved soil structure
🌿 Increased organic matter
🌿 Better nutrient cycling
🌿 Enhanced soil fertility and microbial life
🌿 Diverse, nutrient-dense forage
🌿 Happier, healthier animals
🌿 Drought & disease resilience
🌿 Improved water infiltration
🌿 Supports pollinators and wildlife
🌿 Fewer inputs, more output

Most conventional farms rely on glyphosate to kill off the grass before reseeding, a method that devastates soil biology and strips the land of the biodiversity it depends on. To prepare our field for seeding we strategically intensively grazed our cattle to get the grass as short as possible. The field was then harrowed twice and rolled before stitching.

We’ll also be spreading a solid application of our IMO4 compost pile (indigenous microorganisms) soon, and we’re looking forward to observing and documenting the results in the coming years 🍄🌱

Biodiversity not only supports healthy soil and provides food and habitat for wildlife to thrive, but it creates more nutrient-dense food for us, too. Nature knows best.
