The 11 month waitโฆin vain.
Apple (Diamant de Semilly x Carnute) was the next mare due to foal in Quarryfield this season. She was covered to Contagio Z, repeating the cross that gave us the lovely filly Pippa last year (who we retained).
While Apple looked to be carrying lighter than expected, we still hoped that there was a foal coming, as she has carried lightly previously, and all had been ok then. She was dripping milk on and off recently, but wasnโt showing the usual progression on the other usual fronts, and typically foals very close to the 11 months.
Our vet checked Apple out this week and unfortunately she isnโt actually pregnant. Naturally, she was originally scanned for a pregnancy and heartbeat last season. While it doesnโt take the same emotional toll as losing a foal at, or after birth, it is still very disappointing. Particularly when Apple has given us several promising offspring to date. Unfortunately, itโs another reality that many breeders face, and itโs important to communicate the lows as well as the highs. On the occasions when we as breeders get a reasonable price for a foal or young horse, it has to cover several of the losses too.
*Addition: Apple herself is fit, healthy and in great form๐
