Burrenbeo Trust The Hare's Corner A new wildlife habitat is taking shape at Mo Farm Naturals.

In partnership with The Hare’s Corner, we’ve successfully completed the creation of a 450 m² natural wildlife pond here at Mo Farm Naturals in Sneem, County Kerry.

With no artificial filling required, the pond is already beginning to self-fill naturally from the surrounding water table and rainfall.

Even at this early stage, we’re seeing wildlife respond. Dragonflies have already arrived, and deer are visiting the area, showing just how quickly new habitat can begin to contribute to the wider farm ecosystem.

The pond forms part of our wider work at Mo Farm Naturals to demonstrate how organic farming, biodiversity enhancement and practical habitat creation can work alongside food production.

A particular thank you to Chris O’Neill, adviser with The Hare’s Corner, for his guidance and support throughout the project.

There is still plenty of natural colonisation and development ahead, but it is very satisfying to see the pond beginning to establish itself.

A new wildlife habitat is taking shape at Mo Farm Naturals.

In partnership with The Hare’s Corner, we’ve successfully completed the creation of a 450 m² natural wildlife pond here at Mo Farm.

Where has August gone? Over before we know it.

It’s been a busy month .ie . We’ve built a new hen house, created a wormery that will produce around 2 tonnes of organic worm castings, dug a 450 m² wildlife pond, and harvested our own organic rushes to grow organic oyster mushrooms.

A month of building, biodiversity, circular farming and putting our organic resources to work — and somehow August has disappeared before we even noticed.

🐌 ORGANIC SLUG CONTROL – THEY JUST CAN’T RESIST! 🌱

After trying a number of methods, we’ve found a simple, chemical-free way to reduce slug damage in the garden.

We picked up some reusable slug traps from TEMU and filled them with a homemade bait that slugs seem to find irresistible!

Our recipe:
🥣 1 cup plain flour
🍞 1 teaspoon dried yeast
💧 Add enough water to make a thick paste.

Mix everything together until it resembles pancake batter, then spoon it into the slug traps and place them at soil level around your crops.

The yeast begins to ferment, releasing an aroma that attracts slugs. Once they enter the trap, many are unable to escape.

✅ No slug pellets.
✅ No chemicals.
✅ Safe around edible crops when used correctly.
✅ An inexpensive, reusable solution for organic growers.

We’ve been impressed with the results so far, and it’s another small step towards growing food in harmony with nature.

Pig Hill has been renamed Foxglove Hill. This hill hadn’t been touched for many a year - we allowed the pigs to turn and clear the ground - blind seeds exposed and foxglove’s abundant.

Archaeology at .ie 👣

While digging a drainage ditch, around half a metre down in peat bog, I’ve uncovered the remnants of what appears to be an old stitched leather shoe.

After checking with ChatGPT ( as you do 😉), it may date anywhere from the medieval period through to the 18th century — remarkable to think about the history beneath our feet here in Kerry.

This little piece of the past will now be kept as part of Mo Farm’s history.
